Figured I'd post a report on a river I think you all know well. I fished it for a few days this past week. The flow looks good but the water is already to warm. The fishing was very poor. This is a trend that I noticed starting last summer. Two low water years has really hurt the wild fish population. Then to top it off it froze over last winter likely killing many more fish. With the flow already approx. 1/3 of normal for this time of year you can expect the same, A high mortality rate due to warm low water, then the river is going to freeze again killing more fish. Grim outlook on the river that already has the lowest population of wild fish of all the wild trout rivers listed on DFG's website. To bad because this is a great trout river.  Oh and a report, two days of fishing for maybe a dozen very small dinks, one 16 inch bow, And one 16 inch brown. Thats it, And I do know the river quit well. But the trip was saved, I spent a day on the east walker. Man now thats one hell of a trout river, Big browns slamming hoppers !!!! Next stop, 10 days of fishing on the east side !!! Heenan, Defenitly going to fish Heenan this fall, Been wanting to do that badly.

The weather has been pretty crazy over the past week. I was on the East Carson last weekend and the temps were in the low 70s. It was overcast and the storm was coming in. Fishing was pretty good above Hangman's and below Markleeville Creek. The fish were in the fastest water and in the tailouts. I just looked at the temps today and Markleeville is at about 95 degrees today. I was way up high in the mountains over the weekend to escape the heat!! Knowing the different rivers is a good thing. About three weeks ago I drove to the Carson and it was nearly brown and unfishable. Looked at the map and dropped down 89 and had a ton of fun on the Walker. When you start fly fishing on Putah and the Yuba you can just have a great time on the Walker. Have fun on the East Side and Heenan. With this low water year I am thinking about fishing the Pit, McCloud and Trinity in the next few weeks. By August this year the best place to fish may be Putah at 700cfs....

By August there will be a lot of people fishing in the shadows of big dams.
