As someone mentioned, the Yuba River is fishing like Putah Creek - except with less action. It was tough sledding all right.
I went up there yesterday with a friend and fished above the bridge. Started with a rubberleg skwala nymph with an S&M dropper. Didn't even get a grab for quite a while. Hardly saw any rises and the skwala dry was also ignored. Switched out to small Putah Creek midge and pheasant tail flies and started getting hit. The fish in the picture which measured 19" hit a #20 red disco midge. I wound up landing 3 fish, 12", 14" and 19" and felt lucky about it. If you go to the Yuba right now, even though it's a leap of faith to fish the tiny stuff in big water, that's how you catch them. They are eating midges.
It was comical watching my friend trying to net the 19" for me. He had one of these fancy rubber nets that really don't hold big fish very well. He netted it about 4 times and the fish kept flopping out. Finally I yelled with a laugh, "net the f...kng fish already. You're killing me!" and almost fell in the water Was really surprised that the #20 hook stayed put during that circus.
