Headed down to the river in the downtown area today for a few casts between school and picking up the fiance from work. Stuck a nice striper going on 28"-30". Got him on a red wooly bugger. Almost thought I had a steelie hooked the way he was peeling line and making big runs. Just not aerials, typical big striper behavior.

Talked to a couple bait guys that were fishing in the area and they said they'd been doing well over the last few weeks with not huge numbers, but the occasional big fish. Mostly between downtown and the Lincoln bridge, they said. They said some were easily 30" plus. Also said they'd been hooking a steelie here and there. Makes me sad that these guys are probably gut hooking some of the Napa downrunners, especially considering how in jeopardy our steelhead run is. But hey, I've done it myself in the past so no room to talk I guess.

Anyway, looks like there's some mature fish hanging around in the upper tidewater section at the moment (perhaps gobbling smolts), might be worth throwing a fly at. Was for me!
