Getting back out there February 2013
Permalink

I grew up fishing Putah Creek with my Father. We spent many seasons fishing there and I have had some great fishing here over the years. Fast foward through college (when I never fished because I didn't have the time or desire) and I now have a huge yearning to get back out there and go fishing. I know it is the slow season until the end of February but I went just the other day and look forward to going a lot more ( I was skunked over all on the day but I figure that is the cost of dusting off the cob webs). I know my stream edicate, with this being the end of the spawn I know to stay out of the shallow waters and generally away from areas I think would be good spawning points for the fish).
With the intro being out of the way time to get to the good questions. What are some your favorite spots to fish during this time of the year and through the spring season comming up? I am familiar with "the bridge" and parking markers 1 & 2 but are those "good" spots considering the low flows I experienced while I was up there? What flys are people going with right now? I threw just about everything I have in size 16-18 with no luck!

If anyone is going up I plan on being up there about twice a month on Saturdays ( I know probably the busiest time to go) and I wil be up there Friday feb 15th for sure.

Any advice is greatly apreaciated and if you want to do some fishing shoot me an email at rfogelman656@gmail.com

Welcome rmac, generally speaking I like the flows at 200-300 (they're around 60 now).  They will probably be well below those numbers for a couple more months.  That being said, the middle of the creek is good at those flows pretty much anywhere.  Try going with smaller flies 20-22.  I like using something in red.  Good luck.

Ty thanks or your reaponse. I will try the lower part of the river when I go this saturday. I did make a mistake in my previous post, most of what I was using was in the 18-20 range. I had stopped by creative sports in pleasnt hill before I went and they too has said the smaller the better.

Now what would you define the "middle" of the creek as? Are we talking around the parking areas 3 & 4? Or should i just look out for some deeer slower water?

Yep access 3 & 4 are goods spots when the flows increase.  I just noticed they just ramped up from 60 to 175cfs.

rmac: Make an effort to attend the PCT March 16 event at the CCR Lodge-details listed elsewhere. That is a good way to talk to people one on  one and when they are less reticent about sharing info.
