Deal of the Century.

Guys,

This morning I stumbled onto this sale:

http://bensbargains.net/link/columbia-fast-trek-men-s-fleece-hoodie-23-at-sierra-trading-post-292320/?linkid=0

Basically, what you do is log into your Facebook account then Like this deal and then you get something around 40% off almost everything (including fly rods, reels and lines).  This 40% is in addition to the already massively discounted prices that SierraTradingPost has.  There are a lot of awesome mid and high end fly rods for sale although they won't last long at these prices and some of them don't get the extra 40% discount.

I should add that the additional discount doesn't appear until you add to cart.

Clay, this site is amazing. They have discounted everything. Even Redington rods and outfits, which I was led to believe were price controlled. How have I not heard of this before?

Hi Byron,

Pretty good stuff there!  I should also add that they ship quickly and I hear customer service is also excellent.

After playing around with adding items to the cart, I noticed that a lot of high-end Hardy and Sage stuff is not additionally discounted.  The mid-range rods, like the Fenwick HMX and Reddington Trout Classics, however, are going for well under $100 ($79 and $69).

I bought a lot of tippet and back-up fly lines, plus a ton of flies - the ones I hate to tie.

Good luck.

The reason why you see these prices are because most of the products are discontinued. Basically rods/reels, equip that did not sale when they were being made so they end up in places like sierra trading post.

This whole internet discount craze is what is killing the fly shops.

I agree with Berry on this one.  We have lost too many good fly shops last couple years.  Thankfully Sweeney's is still around over in Napa.  Seems like I have said this before on here....Can't forget Outdoor pro shop in Rohnert park as well. oops

Thanks for the tip! I picked up some merino wool base layers and a scored pair of highly touted Korkers Chrome boots for $66! Now I can switch out soles when I'm away from the Putah and use my boots with clearer conscience.

For the record, I support you guys in your support of local fly shops.  My closet is full of expensive Sage rods and Orvis reels I purchased from King's Western Angler and Outdoor Pro Shop (when Scott Carey worked there) and even some stuff from Sweeney's.

However and unfortunately, the business model of the fly shop is broken.  When Dwight sold King's over a decade ago, he told me that the only things he was making money on was high-end rods and reels and booking vacations/guides.  He could see the writing on the wall with the equipment and the Chinese and the competition for booking trips was/is fierce.  You won't see any new shops opening soon.

I still think some of these fly shops can scratch out an existence with customer loyalty through people that work there.  Bob Alwine is a great reason to shop at Sweeney's (in addition to its well-stocked fly fishing dept) and other shops have these kinds of employees.  Unfortunately, again we don't have anything like this in our area and I'm sorry Cole, Outdoor Pro Shop does not qualify with its largely symbolic fly fishing department and limited tying material inventory.  The last 2 times I went there, the shelves were 1/2 empty and most of the tying materials I went for were out of stock.

There are also plenty of people who cannot afford to overpay for $600 rods and reels and these kinds of sales gets them in the game at great price.  As Lefty Kreh says "It's pretty hard to find a bad fly rod these days."

Don't forget about Reel Anglers in Grass Valley.

Tom is a great guy and on the Yuba all the time.

Yeah and for minimum wage guys like myself, Sierra trading post and sites like that make it possible for me to buy new equipment without breaking the bank. Had I a better job, I'd definitely buy all my gear at Sweeney's. But for now, these discount sites are the only way I can afford anything but entry level gear on my budget. Sweeney' still gets all my fly, tippet, and weight business, but waders, boots and rods I just can't afford paying fly shop prices.

I've been buying stuff from Sierra Trading Post for over 10 years. Everything from polarized shades to tents, backpacks, fishing shirts, etc. You can't go wrong with the prices. right now they have a really nice Hendrix Outdoors wood frame- rubberized bag trout net for around 40 bucks. As a regular customer, I picked one up with my discount for 32 bucks plus shipping. I almost pulled the trigger on one at last years ff show in Pleasanton for I think $75.00. I decided to wait and was able to get it for half that from S.T.P.

I support local fly shops every chance I get. I have a fairly good local shop. But what if your local fly shop sucks ?!!! What if they are jerks, or really don't have what you want or rairly have good advice? What if they say "we can get that for you" and they take forever to get it or forget to order it all together and you spend weeks waiting for it only for them to say it's on the way? What if you want Tiemco hooks and all they sell is Daiichi? What then ?

Personally I am tired of people bitching about all of the local fly shops loosing their ass because of online stores. Local fly shops need to get with the times. Welcome to the real world dumb asses, start selling online as well as in store. The Fly Shop, The Blue Quill Angler, Stone River Outfitters, Keine's, just to name a few "get it" and have thrived because of the internet. Wake up and look at the big picture. The internet isn't going away!!!
