Now before i start, no i am not trying to stir up crap, like some of you automatically assume. legitimate question. I see that alot of you here in the forum speak loudly against targeting spawning trout. (which i couldnt agree more on) I was wondering what the difference is between fishing for spawning trout and fishing for steelhead or salmon. Is it only when you sight fish or fish right on spawning beds that is wrong? being that steelhead and salmon only come in to spawn wouldnt that be the same? been wondering this for a decade! If someone more knowledgable than me could fill me in i would appreciate it. thanks!
It is my impression that steelhead come back to the rivers to spawn but also will stay in the river for months before and after their active spawning period. My feeling is that fishing over actively spawning fish is certainly bad practice and may very well lower their success and is not "sporting".

I tend to think it is human nature to practice what I call situational ethics in making fishing choices: each opportunity is weighed against the risk to the fishery.
Its been said many times here that PCT considers fishing for PC's spawning wild trout as unethical because of the risk to the fish. This is a very small breeding population with limited suitable habitat and high predator exposure (two/four legged, flying). DFG/PCT is marking spawning areas with signage. Keep that in mind and fish deeper water or riffles well above or below these sites.
Personal restraint and shared education is a key to PC's fishery comeback. Practice, practice practice.
