I went to Putah on tuesday. Didn't see anyone hook up but heard stories of alot of hook ups but only landing a few. I was unable to get a hook up at all. Have been following the forum and used those tactics but nada! Fish were where I was fishing but couldn't hook up to save my life. Was seeing splashy rises, so I took samples and found green caddis larva in the weeds that were attaching to my fly. Saw no dry fly action at all. I used egg-zebra midge, assorted small nynphs, etc. Can anyone help a new guy out?

Merry Christmas,
Bitdog

Well, it sounds like you are using the same flies I use at Putah this time of year.

I'm not sure if you're using an indicator, but if you are, take it off.  Tight line in the

pockets....I put a link below- the guy discusses the technique.  I'm pretty sure the picture

is from Putah Creek too.  http://www.sjflyshop.com/aspnuke/articles.asp?id=3

Hope that helps.

Don't feel bad tight lines, I have found it slow the past week as well.  I hooked a couple yesterday but landed none.  My best luck lately has been on red or orange micro-eggs.  Last Friday I caught a 21 inch rainbow on one and today I hooked a BIG fish on the same egg and had him on for ten minutes before he broke my new leader two feet up from the knot.  I think he finally got the line under a rock.  I really tried to keep the fish in open water, but whenever I got it within 20 feet it took off across the creek.  Thos darn big fish are too smart for us novices.  Good luck and give the eggs a try.

Hmmmm, kinda sounds like a position or offering issue. A lot of times, if the fish are focused on one paticular bug and you don't have it ( I think midges in this case) you may be able to trick them by putting on some sort of film fly( midge emerger, griffith's Gnat, etc...) or attractor (stimulator, etc...), as the fish are active and may eat something different during the fray. Even then you may have a similiar imitation, but you are not positioning the fly correctly (the Zone) for them to take it. Usually I will take this time to kinda watch and learn whats going on. More times than not, if fish are active and i can't match it, i'll just move along until i find a strecth where I can be more productive. To much of a good thing when it comes to hatches and trout, usually means bad news for the fly-fisherman.

Personally it sounds kinda like they were smaller fish (6"-10"), especially if they were making a big ruckus on the surface as larger fish wont burn that kind of energy to eat such a small meal.

Hi Phil,
That's good info. One thing I didn't do is move on. I will remember not to stay in one spot for hours.

Best Regards,
Rich

Hi all!

First time posting here! !st, I have to say that this is a great site, Thanks to Greg! Second, I fished the Putah last year and did not do very well until I started reading the posts and exploring the river more. Finally, I have been fishing the Putah every so often these last couple of months and last Saturday(12/17), in the very cold drizzle, I landed some very nice fish: 20" to 23" range! I wish I could post the pics but don't see an attachment link. The most productive flies were a red midge size 20 or 22, a size 22 tan Putah special from Fish First, a Prince and a Green Fox Pupa. Even with the river level up a bit and slightly less clear, fishing has been good. Of course with the last rain..........Who knows!? I hope to check it out tomorrow! I will keep you posted!
