Just got back from a great morning on the Pit at Rock Creek. Had 6 fish in the net with a 17 incher the best of the bunch. Took a couple of swims and filled my waders which felt pretty good in the heat.
Tough river to fish. I think I lost about 20 flies and I never had so many fish break me off. The big ones run straight behind the nearest rock and they are gone. Took me a while to figure out it was best to use 4x and horse them to the surface. Still, I think I had 20 plus hookups and just landed the 6.
They were eating anything black.
Yesterday was so so on Hat Creek at the riffle. Got two small fish early and then it died, nothing till about 1pm when another small hatch came off and I hooked a beautiful 18 inch fish but it broke me off too.
trying to figure out where to fish tomorrow as I sip a cold pale ale in my campground. Life is tough.T

The Pit is my favorite river. I live in Cassel so I fish it all the time. Strong fish. Even the smaller ones fight hard. I like the rock creek area and just downstream from there is good too. I normally use black flies as well but with the caddis flies in the afternoon, the Fox Poopah has been working really well. The higher flows have made it tougher but it also keeps a lot of people away. Lots of solitude in the canyon.
Sounds like a good day on the Pit! Fishing has been best for me in the morning and then again in the evening until last light. Show up on a late afternoon camp out and then fish the morning bite. Size 12 tan fox poohpahs usually work. I usually start out with 4x and usually end up with 2x tippet. Rocket ships they are.
It was my first time out there and I had a blast. I hear it was easier to fish when the flows were lower. There were no spots to cross and a lot of good looking water was out of reach. When I had my first hookup I was sure it was a 20 inch fish it took so much line but when I got it close it was about 12.
I need to hit the store and restock on leaders and tippett. Expensive place to fish.
I pulled a couple of hatchery fish out of Burney Creek this morning for breakfast. They were hitting drys hard. On the road home right now.
