got a buddy who just moved to san fran area and wants to hit the river anybody willing to show him around... Not a newby either he has worked for several fly shops including marriots, and is probably one of the best out there
These fish are spooky, picky creatures. Stealth is an absolute necessity. Especially at lower flows, light tippet from 5-7x is best.
These fish get a fair bit of pressure year-round, and are consequently picky about both presentation and fly selection. Your drifts have to be spot on and you need to manage your line well. Your friend would do well to keep a fly box stocked with plenty of mayfly/BWO and midge imitations in sizes 16-22 and various colors. I like to fish it with a three fly rig - a general attractor on top, like a san juan, prince, hare's ear, red headed stepchild or copper john, and then two smaller flies below that which I suspect the fish may be feeding on. Again, mayfly/BWO and midge imitations are generally safe bets.
You're gonna run into lots of different types of water if you get to know the creek well, deeper runs, glides, riffles, boulder gardens and pocket water, as well as long deep streches of frog water. Make sure to adjust leader length, tippet size, and weight often to make sure you're near the bottom.
I'll be up there tomorrow afternoon despite the rain. If your friend needs someone to show him some good holes, tell him to look for a red Toyota station wagon.
And careful where you wade, those eggs are still cookin in the redds.
That sounds like most of the water out here in Utah this time of year. I really appreciate the courtesy u don't get that out of alot of guys. Ill pass the word on to him.. again thanks
