Never been up that way before and I'm really looking forward to it. I'll have the whole family in tow, including the in-laws from LA, which means there'll be lots of babysitters and potential fishing time.
Where are the "must fish" spots? I don't mind driving an hour or so to get to good fishing.
Burney creek is a great little fishery if you don't mind tourists. Black stoneflies work all year there. There may be some salmon flies around at that point. Right down the road is the canyon stretch of the Pit river below Lake Britton. You can't go all the way up there and not fish there. Baum Lake is close by as well. I don't fish Hat creek much anymore but the powerhouse 2 riffle and carbon flats are worth a look. Manzanita Lake is about a 45 minute drive from where you are at and that is an awesome fishery. Good luck.
You must try and figure out a way to fish Fall river that time of year. If you hit it right and being that it is June the hex hatch should be on. Do some research and make it happen.
The Pit River but don't fish it alone, without studded wading boots or a sturdy wading staff. It can be tough wading but the fishing can be awesome. Another cool side trip if you have a float tube is Manzanita Lake at the foot of Mt Lasen.
If you make it over to Manzanita you gotta stop in and eat at JJ's cafe in Old Station. My mother in law works there and they have some of the biggest, rib-stickin meals in the whole area. Plates are HUGE. Not to mention they bake their own pastries and sweet breads(apple cinnamon etc.) They are only open for breakfast and lunch so go early, you won't be disappointed.
Thanks foR the tips. Looking at my guidebooks I think I'll hit the "glory hole" on tithe Pit one day and Hat Creek another, the Fall looks like a place where a boat is needed and I don't fancy a long drift in an REI inflatable kayak.
The rest of the time I can drown worms with my daughter in Burney creek.
You would think I would be 50 lbs. heavier just based on my IPA consumption. Luckily I don't live across the street from the restaurant like mom in law does and it's a seasonal restaurant on top of that. Good luck Bob, you're in for some great fishing up there.
