Everyone -

I'm traveling from Minneapolis to SF at the end of next week.  I have family in Benicia which is only about 1 hour south of Putah I believe.

I was thinking about trying to do a 1/2 day on the water.  However I'm concerned with how feasible this might be without a guide.  Is a 1/2 day too short to squeeze in?

Especially given the posts about spawning fish I'm a little worried.  I really don't know how to spot that and don't want to cause any damage.

Thoughts?

I'm no expert on this subject but maybe I could help a little. If you can see the fish this time of year, they are probably spawners and near their redds. Wade carefully, watch where you step. Avoid areas where there is smaller sized gravel piled up, those are the redds. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the positive comments CN. One of Putah Creeks Trout's three missions is to provide education for those that visit the Creek. Patze, there is a lot of info in the posts. Use narrow key word searches, otherwise you'll be buried in detail. Also visit Bono's fly page for good patterns. A half day is short when you don't know where to go. Bono or Berryessie could guide you to some safe water, away from redds and spawning fish, and put you on some good fish.

Hi friend, just wanted to give my two cents here. I fish Putah whenever I get the chance. I fish year round, largely because my fishing time is very limited. Part of the way I make a living involves confrontation with people in an uncontrolled setting so when it comes to fishing waters, the law dictates where and when I fish and no one else. That being said, I've never upset anyone involved with Putah, or local folks etc. and never had words with anyone. All anyone has ever asked for is respect for the creek, which is why I stay away from the redds, and try to use common sense. If it looks like a redd, avoid it. If you see large fish just laying there this time of year. Leave them alone. That kind of fishing is pathetic anyway!! Search this forum to answer any questions you may have. There are a lot of knowledgable folks on this forum that have posted. I've even PM'd some of them and always get replies. Enjoy your trip!

Oh yeah, and I've got a hell of an education from reading SK60's posts in this regard among others. Look those up.
