The best answer I can give is do a word search on this site for words like "flies, setups, tippet, indicators", etc. February is the last main month of the rainbow spawn, so careful wading AWAY from gravel areas is required to avoid trampling eggs and alevins-search "redds" and you can find a picture or two as well as a lot of "spirited" discussion about them. You might consider a half day with guide Greg Bonovich, who owns this forum. These are wily, "experienced" wild fish-small flies with 5-6X fluoro tippets work best. Streamers can be hit and miss, but throw some in. Go to 4X with streamers-the big fish can break you off during the hit

Hi everyone, I'll be making a trip to San Francisco in mid to late February and it looks like I'll be able to set aside one day for fishing Putah Creek. Where I am now, tailwaters are extremely cold and the main activity is tiny midges.
What kind of activity can I expect at this time of year? Will fish be active enough to fish big streamers? Are the bugs mainly tiny?
I'm excited to fish CA, never been able to wet a line out there. Are there any other recommendations for streams to look into within a couple hours drive of SF?
Any random information about Putah Creek that might be good to know? I plan to find a parking spot somewhere below the dam and pound the water all day.
