I forgot to mention in my Putah report yesterday an unusual catch. I caught what I think is called a stickleback. It was less than 1-1/4" long. And yes, it actually ate my #22 midge nymph.
I actually caught one of those last September at access 5. Ugly little thing. I figured the big trout must eat them so I rigged it up and swung it through a deep hole and picked up an elusive 28" Putah brown.
Actually, just kidding on the brown trout part of the story but I did catch a stickleback, it WAS small, and it WAS ugly.
Putah is loaded with sticklebacks, these little critters can live in fresh or brackish water and they come in a 2 or 3 spine variety and are native to our delta system which includes lower Putah (up to lk Berryessa). I dont know if they are above the lake. I assume they could be trout food. I used to raise these things along with riffle sculpin and mosquito fish when I was a kid. The stickle backs could live in my tanks 3 to 4 years, and they're really cool to watch as they kind of hover around instead of swim like most fish.
I found one stuck in a fish's mouth on the creek several years ago. I was too late to rescue the stickleback, but I swear the Trout thanked for removing it. Judging by the look on the fish's face I cannot recommend eating them!
