Being out of work has got me to start thining about alternate ideas to make a little bit of money other than doing electrical side jobs.
Is their any real market for somebody to produce a couple of small wooden prams/driftboats a year? I've been thinking of smaller boats such as the one acutioned off by PCT or perhaps a slightly larger 2 person sized boat. Something more along the lines of a driftboat yet still small enough to car top or fit into the back of a truck and not be dependant on a trailer.
A rough guestimated target price of around $1,500. Nothing I'd ever get rich doing, especially if I was to consider my hours to build the boats but if it's doing someting I enjoy (woodworking) then whats the harm.

I say you build a couple and see where it goes. A couple years ago I was at a crossroads with the pram vs. pontoon thing. I like building stuff too but got a pontoon instead. You are probably a much better wood worker than me so I say try it. There has to be a market for custom prams right?
Here is an idea I think would produce some money. A high tech lightweight drift boat. Super skinny so you don't need a trailer. So you can drive 95 mph to the trinity. Just throw it in the bed of your truck. A shorter boat for an suv. Carbon fiber and aluminum.. Nobody out there has used the technology that is being used for other action sports!
Well a few responses here. a Pm ...good points made. On top of that I now have a job interview on Tuesday :)
Okay, I'll pull the trigger, pick up some plans and see where it leads. No need to work on my Jeep this Winter anyway so the garage is free and clear( well honestly it's a ginormus mess but workable).
Carbon fiber and AL3+ isn't going to happen. My brother in Bozeman Montana used to make Yellowstone Drifters which were fiberglass boats. Evidently business was good but the work was sketchy...bad dust, repirators etc and he moved on. I'll stick to wood.

Have you seen the float tube on Kiene's that shigspeed made? That thing is crazy light. I wonder if you could make a bigger boat the same way?? Looks like it would pop on a rock is the only bad thing.

Hey Lightfoot, dont know if you got my pm or not. But I would be interested in a custom dory. Ill be in the market for a new boat next yr. Im not going aluminum or glass, I WANT WOOD, and I absolutly love mine, but if I could I would change a few things to it to make it an even better rowing, better drifting, and just an all around better wooden drift boat. Call Me.

The Tuesday job interview mentioned earlier ended up with a job offer and subsequent hiring on 11/11/11. Feels good to be a productive member of society again.
After much debate I decided to just do the standard 16 footer as a first boat. I'll figure out the trailer issue later. Plans have been ordered and should be here in another couple of days. I looked real hard at the Greg Tatmun boats as well as many others but decided to get off the fence and just order something. With luck this turns out ok and I end up with a new hobby
I've read this thing from cover to cover a couple of times now. If anybody wants some historical knowledge of where it all started it's an awsome read.
