Finally caught a fish

I have hit the Delta a few times and always get skunked.  I finally caught a fish.  It was slightly bigger than the fly!!!  We caught some bigger fish, and had a lot of fun.  A big thanks to my guide and striper king GC.

Sounds fun Otter.  No slip mono loop on your fly?  Been practicing those for steelhead swinging this year.  Does it hold up?

I have been using a Rapala knot. It held up for a pretty big salmon landed that was evading the sea lions... It is basically an improved clinch that you tie into a an overhand knot. You will probably need to look it up. Supposed to be 95%.

I have also found a site that tells you when the tides are best. I hope it helps. It is called the solunar tide report. It gives you the best time and days to fish a certain area. Just like trout fishing it seems it will take some time to figure it all out...

Tide reports could come in handy for sure.   Especially if a monster sleeper wave busted open the river instead of monster rains.  Let the fish in without blowing up the river.  I can only wish.... speaking of tide reports that may help with my next venture,  surf casting.

Hey Chris,

Nice catch on the gummy minnow.  While surf fishing the Pacific side of Baja at Todos Santos, that was my best fly.  Everything hit the chartreuse gummy, but particularly Roosterfish.  I think I landed over 15 of them on one gummy.  Also, landed an 8lb Jack Crevalle that put an end to that particular fly.

Also, were you with an actual guide or a friend?  I am looking for a guide to take a buddy of mine and me on a striper-fest in the delta.  Never went fishing there before and want to do a jump start.

Tks.

I would also recommend Mark Pinto he has a pretty fast boat and can get around the Delta with ease. We fished with him last year and we caught a bunch of fish. The gummy minnow has treated me well!! Have caught largemouths and my biggest striper on a gummy minnow. It was only about 3 lbs, but it was fun. Sounds like you had fun down in Baja. It is on my list of things to do. Roosterfish and an 8lb jack crevalle is awesome. Did you ever get over to Sweeneys and talk to Bob? He can talk about Baja for hours. He catches monster fish down there and also in the Delta.

I'll call Mark Pinto to see what the story is.  Thanks for the tip Steve and Chris.

Chris,

You definitely need to head down to Baja.  Even though the fish I caught weren't large by Baja standards, they basically made steelhead look like weaklings.  I had never fly fished salt water, but now I'm hooked on it.  This wasn't supposed to be a fishing trip, but turned out to be about as much fun as I've ever had fishing even with the limited amount of casting time my wife rationed out to me.

Next time, I'm heading out to La Paz with pockets full of clousers, surf candies and of course - gummy minnows!  Will need to talk to Bob at Sweeney's firsh.
