I first want to start off by giving a big THANKS to SK60 and those that helped out on 10/28 for the weed removal session on the creek with DFG. It was a last minute decision from DFG to do this, and a last minute scramble from SK60 to make this happen, and in only a few days he rallied the troops and got it done. I’m glad it worked out not only for SK60 and DFG, but for the creek and fish too. While out on the creek, I went and checked it out and you guys did an awesome job, the fish will definitely have an easier time spawning this yr where this took place. Lets hope this will continue on a yearly basis, and that next year we can include the entire creek. Great Job guys, kudos to you all.
So decided not only to check out the removal area but to do some scouting of my own. Guess that could be called a fishing trip. Lots of bugs, lots of fish, and wouldn’t you know it very few people. Water is low and very clear, almost gin clear, so it’s all about light fluorocarbon tippet, 5x-6x. Couldn’t believe all the bug activity today, they were all out in force, caddis, mayflies, midges, even a stonefly, which was really surprising. Today was the most surface activity that I have seen in years, even though the fish were not sipping, they were still hittin the surface like crazed animals for those emergers. What an awesome site. The usual Putah Creek flies where the ticket today, small caddis, smaller olive mayflies, and even smaller midges with variations of each. I love to see the creek doing so well and truly becoming what it once was. Maybe not the size of the fish like it used to be, but just the sure number of fish that can be hooked in a handful of hours. I started around 945 up top and ended it at 4pm down low, moving around here and there, with 20+ fish hooked, and 17 to hand, with most of the spots producing 2-5 fish. Not only have the numbers been getting better, but the size of the fish have been increasing too, not just over the past year, but just since the beginning of spring. The majority of the fish today where 12-18", and the few that were lost were in the upper teens to pushing the 20" mark, unfortunately those bigger fish made my sz24 hooks and 6x tippet look like silly string.
All in all a great day on the river, and cant wait to see her again.
Brian
