Grandpa's Bamboo Rod
Permalink

I just got my grandpa's old bamboo flyrod labeled "steelhead/Salmon" out of storage.  I was thinking about using it this winter.  It looks to be in almost perfect condition. Quality looks good.   It comes with two tips, all three pieces are 4.5 feet long.  There is no signature, weight, or writing on the rod.  Does anyone have any input.  Not looking to sell it, but don't want to wreck it.  Should I use it, I think my grandpa would not mind.  I would love to know who made it, how much its worth.

Thanks

Dave

There is a web site that is all about bamboo fly rods. They even have a section for appraisals and helping you to figure out what you have. Ask the experts.

I wouldn't use it if I were you.  Just my opinion.  Last thing you want to do is ruin it.  I have an old bamboo that my grandfather actually made, it's an 8.5 foot three piece but has an extra tip.  One is fast and the other is slow, if you can call bamboo fast.  I am going to redo some of the wraps that are falling apart and mount it.  He passed away when I was only 3 but most of the rods I fished with as a kid with my grandma were rods he built on old fenwick glass blanks.  She recently passed away in march and I really want to get ahold of my aunt and make sure those rods end up in the "right hands" if you know what I mean.
