ok, im new to the board and the area, so i did not do quite as well as some of you guys.  i fished by the 360 marker turnout, not sure what number, ill check, there were a couple of cars there, and they probably did better.  i went out late, and fished till dark, there was a small hatch happening in looked like, however, i could not match it so that stunk, i did get a couple of fish on black ants.  any ideas of what typically works on the putah, just pointers, because all my go-to flys are san diegan, and did not produce up here.  thanks.

Nick,

I read your 10/8 report and saw that you used San Diegan Flies on Putah.

Where abouts in SD do you fly fish?

Flies that have worked for me on Putah are elk hair caddis, pt nymphs, and black midge.

Im from Descanso, which is actually about 40 miles east of sd proper, in mountains.  we use buggers out there, hairs ears, but i am out of those, and pale mayflys/mosquitos, nothing dark, or even really big down there, big is a size 16, avg is 18, for top water down there.  I did do some surf fishing too, but those are crab imitations, and i dont think there are grey crabs in the putah.  Thanks for the tips.  Hope to see you out there. Good luck

Try a size 18 or 20 RS-2 emerger olive.  There are quite a few Baetis (BWO) bugs on the river right now.  I tie them on a 3761 or Tiemco 100 hook.  Use super fine dry fly dubbing olive with pheasant tail or light olive hackle for the tail.  Use CDC or light dun z-lon for the emerging wing.  During the day the wingcase is darker, and you should tie some with a turkey tail or black ostrich herl wingcase.  Try a rusty spinner or a BWO parachute in the evening.
