Made it to the water around 2:30 this afternoon. Initially tried the big hole below the staircase. There were 2 cars parked upstream from the lower access and I was hoping to have the hole to myself.

I crossed in the fast water below the big hole and found another flyfisherman already there. I'm under the impression he wasn't there long as he hooked a couple fish right off the bat then it slowed down. I fished the short run just below the big hole for about 20 minutes. Lost one and had a couple of grabs. It didn't look like the guy above me was going anywhere so I headed back to the car.

I headed down to the area by the Rangers trailer. Fished the last run below the trailer before slow water with good success. Nothing over about 14" with most well under. Stayed there for about an hour then worked the water above.

I've never really had much luck in that run just above the last hole but did manage 2 takes and one fish before crossing to the other side. Once across I hiked up to the big hole just above the Rangers trailer.

There were a couple of bait slingers on the road side earlier but were now gone. No idea how they did as I didn't stop to talk. Fishing from that side is kinda tuff at these flows anyway so was glad to be on the far bank. I did rather well in that run with another big fish of perhaps just over 14" but very colorfull. Fished that section for about an hour then headed back to the last hole again. Hooked another 1/2 dozen fish in the lower hole before my fly found a tree and I decided to call it a day.

I don't think the fish were particularly picky today. I even picked up 2 fish on a variant of a black A.P. that I tie for the Pit river. First time I've cought a fish on Putah with that bug. Four other flies worked though nothing on a glo-bug.

All in all a decent day with about 20 fish or so to hand. Biggest fish perhaps a little over 14". Foul hooked two and missed quite a few takes but for an odd twist I lost very few hooked fish. Flows were very manageable for wading. Crossing below the big hole at the staircase was easy...got a staff? Crossing below the Ranger trailer was also a piece of cake though the normal winter flow crossing above the big hole upstream from the trailer looked a little dicey.

Where is the "staircase?"  I am off to fish PC this weekend; perhaps Saturday evening/Sunday a.m.  I surely appreciate all of the information that is so willingly passed on through this board.   Thank you.

If you could enlighten me of the whereabouts of the "staircase" I would appreciate it as well.

Thanks

I would appreciate this info as well.  Although I fish mainly at #5, I would like to learn about some other areas.  I tried sending you a private email a few days ago, but perhaps it didn't go through.  Thanks.

LOL PUTAH Creek is NOT that long. While I serously doubt that there are any seceret spots on Putah sometimes one wounders. If you were on a mission and didn't spend too much time in any one sot you could probably fish just about every run, slot, ripple, pool ect on Putah in one day.

Explore

and if you see a lifted white Jeep TJ stop and say hello.
