Met up with Brian on the American this morning to test the spey rod for his up coming Alaska trip. This is a 11 weight, a little heavier than his 5 weight. He tied on a piece of red yarn an cast down and across and said he thought he felt a tug. Next cast he got two tugs , third cast also got a tug. He then tied on an alvin, next five cast  brought four fish to hand. We were laughing because he wasn't trying to catch any fish, I wish I had brought the video camera.

That was crazy stupid James. Who would have guessed you can feel 1/4lbers on a 15ft 10wt. But you can. Those little buggers hit that piece of yarn like it was going out of business. Couldnt pass it up though. Had to break that rod in my hands early. LOL. This rod will do me well when I guide in Alaska this yr. Thanks a bunch James. Next time we meet Ill remember to bring my 3wt so you can use that while I am gone.

Well we parted ways at Watt, and I went up river. Not with the 10wt, but with my 6119 TCX, and it was like deja vu all over again. This time just supersized. Fished a spot thats been doing well for me, had 2 clients swinging last week in this run and hooked up with a few fish and landed a 10lber. No 10lber today, but fish were moving, and active, so it was time to swing. After about 2 hours or so, 6 hook ups and 3 steelhead landed.

All in all a good day. Ill be back out on the water tomorrow trying to get these 1/4lbers to attack a fly skated on the surface. Should be a blast.

So after how the AR fished yesterday. Figured Id hit it up again today, but bring much smaller guns. Set up both the 3wt and 5wt with dry dropper set up and it was a blast. Lots of 1/4lb wild steelhead as well as resident rainbows, with an occational hatchery steelhead. It was a blast. The 3wt got most of the use until the winds came up, and switched over to the 5wt and a nymph set up, and the fish kept taken. Once I saw 2 big steelhead roll through, I decided it was time to bring out the switch rod and try to get some big dogs. That never happened but the lil guys kept coming.

If you are trying to get someone into fly fishing, or a kid now is the time to get out on the AR with all the 10-18" fish that are in the system.

You mentioned you were using drys. Is thre a hatch coming off, or is it more of an attractor pattern?

I was tossing hoppers, chernobal ants as attractors, for a dry/dropper set up. There were some mayflys coming off here and there, so i put on a parachute adams and did get a few on that. Most of the time the fish took the dropper thought, but some of the nicer fish took the hopper or ant.

now that sounds like some fun fishing. Are the 1/4 pounders concentrated in any one part of the river right now or can they pretty much be found through out the system?

Well funny thing is, is that it is both. They can be found throughout the river, but I know there are certain areas that they will pod up as well.

Rain is still coming, so it will be good for awhile.

Ya those 1/4 lbrs are a lot of fun. I picked up 9 yesterday strong little devels. Hint, I saw the birds ( barn swallows ) in a swarm picking up bugs as they hatched got right in that area cast and swing into where they were swarming and had a good time for almost 2 hours. The best thing was that every fish was wild.
