If you are serious about making a long term committment to learning how to fish Putah creek, you may want to consider creating a fishing journal. To start, bring a small notebook and pen in your vest. For each trip record the date, start time, end time, the weather, wind, outside temperature, and most importantly the stream flow. For each fish you catch record the type of fish, it's length, the fly, the time caught and the location (use abbreviations where needed). When you get home transfer the information from your notebook to your PC. Add a summary paragraph or two on the day's fishing and include a freeform "notes" section for any memorable thoughts about the day's fishing (perhaps about the big fish you caught!). After you have kept the journal for a while, you will probably find that: - the journal is a source of enjoyable reading since it allow you to "relive" past trips - the journal is a great learning tool since is has recorded what flies worked a what locations - most important in the long run, you will learn which locations produced best at which particular stream flows. Thus, given any stream flow, you will be able to zero in on the productive areas on the stream, and bypass the uproductive areas. This will make you a more efficient and productive angler.
i started one of these last month i like to record all of that including the length of the fish. i think its a great idea and a way to improve your fishing by comparing weather conditions to colors as well as fish activity.

If you have an iPhone or iPad, I found a good digital log book called FishTales. It allows you to record catches including details such as a photo and the GPS coordinates. You can add flies to your digital database including photos and then associate them with the catch.
The advantage of digitalizing the process is that you can then and looking quickly see groupings according to location and lure and dates.
Somewhat oriented more tonthe gear guys but you can make it work for fly fishing. Give it a try.
