I was on the way home from a fishin trip last night and saw two groups of Elk cruising.  The first group had a monster bull sitting on the side of the hill, but was too far away to get a picture.  This is the second group here although this bull was a smaller sample.  Still impressive though and you can actually see him bugling in one of the pictures.

They are big animals alright, as I'm sure you are aware if you ever want to get up and personal with these guys head out to point Reyes, they are quite used to people you can literally walk through the heard. The big bulls are very impressive and imposing.

Wild Elk are great to see up close. My guess is you were up chasing steel in the Klamath or Trinity area. That is the only area around here you see wild elk...

I have done some pack trips out at Point Reyes but missed the herd unfortunately.  Two nice sized bobcats though.  There is also more Elk up in Crescent City near the Smith River.  Over new years last year I met some buddies up there.  I saw the signs for Elk crossing but didn't really process it completely.  Come around the next corner a little hot and there they are.  I had to slow down pretty fast so as not to make the local paper.  I regrouped and came around the next corner slowly and there is a 6 point bull standing in this dudes front yard munching his grass, right in front of his lonely 7 foot pine tree which is still has lights on it from Christmas.  I was laughing out loud thinking how the hell do you get you mail in the morning.  I can hear it now......I got it the other day.....yeah but I took the trash out.  Chris those are the Cache creek Elk on hwy. 20 between Pleasant valley rs. and Williams on I-5.
