I hadn't seen too many reports lately, so I thought I'd warm up the info hotline with a report on the Yuba.
After 5 weeks of no fishing, Alastair and I headed up to the Lower Yuba on Sunday to remember how to do it. We made up for lost time and put in a solid 12 hours of fishing during the day. It's been a long time since I put a 12 hour day on the river. Flows are very high right now at around 2700 CFS. I am proud to report that Alastair passed his mountain goat initiation on Sunday as we had to do some major humping to access water. We were able to cross the river at this flow, but there's only one place to do it above the bridge. We had to really work to land fish during the day. Many bug changes and many depth changes. Along with a few smaller fish, Alastair landed 3 nice fat 17"-18" fish and I was able to land a 20" fish. Nymphs that were small and green worked well. We caught several on S & M Nymphs and Might May's.
There were a reasonable number of bugs coming off during the day. Lots of Yellow Sallies, PMD's, a few Caddis and Stoneflies as well. The evening hatch was a good one with plenty of risers. PMD's primarily came off. JL stumbled upon us and fished the evening hatch before we retired to the Happy Viking in Yuba City to rehydrate and tell more lies.
As we were at our cars, a Game Warden came by who we chatted up for about a half hour. A great guy and good to see them out hunting for poachers. He was specifically looking for out of regulation fishers on this run.
Out of the house at 5 AM and back home at midnight made for a long day. Here's a picture of the 20" fatty and a happy fisherman.
