I'm a lure fisherman that saw the light... and turned to the fly. I've recently joined the Napa Valey Fly Fishers and Trout unlimited. I've been out only a handful of times with only moderate success, as I'm learning it's hard to find motivated people and even more difficult to understand the cryptic flyfisherman's jargon . I'd love to talk, listen, and observe. Essentially, I need to learn the fundamentals like mending, fly selection and leader/indicator set-up, and hook-sets.Â
If anyone is ever out on the weekends or makes a trip to the Sierras and wouldn't mind a new, motivated memeber to join, please let me know.Â
If you don't burn you out on the learning curve, fly fishing can give you a lifetime of enjoyment. The sport has definitely taught me patience. You could argue that just when you think you've seen it all, something new comes along. Every outing is an adventure.
I've gotten a great deal of good advise from members of this board, and formed some great friendships. Read as many of the threads and posts as you can. Even the older ones. Once you kind of have the lay of the land, you'll find everybody who posts the forum to be fairly free with advise. Usually better if you can ask specific questions.
The very BEST advise ever is to just FISH! You can read, chat, web-surf, take lessons and on and on, but I learn something every time I go out. Sometimes big, and sometimes subtle. GO FISH! Be forewarned, Putah doesn't give up her secrets easily ... not my words! but true.
Keep your eyes open for posts from "Bono" (Greg Bonovich). He is the local guide who created this forum. He is very knowledgeable and a respected authority on the creek. If your open to the approach, hiring a guide can accelerate the process. There are also some great anglers in your club, NVFF.
So go out and get some fish stories to tell!
Good Luck and welcome again, Ed.

First of all , thanks Ed for the nice words I'll send your 20.00 today in the mail!! Brandon if you have some questions I'll be happy to help if you want to give me a call n/c obviously. As most of you on this forum have probably figured out I'm not an E-mail kinda guy but can be sort of long winded on the phone! So give me a hollar and I could elaborate a bit on any questions you may have. Thanks Greg 707-480-3809
Brandon ! good to see you on the forum . and see no drama . yet . ha ha ha . any ways ya that was a lot of fun we may not have caught any fish but as you can see there's more to fly fishing then always ! landing fish . maybe we can go with someone next. time Ill talk to someone I know (  alastair ) and see when he is free to hit the yuba and we can go from there . but the flows did seem a little high. because when we got to the top of the hike there was no access to that hole by the island . remember ! So thats always something to be mindful of . the flows ! . take notice of the flows at the stanislause  right now . otter said that they are at 1000cfs and thats a little high . It fishes much better at 400cfs  and it i8s a pretty healthy drive but we are going too redding i think may 1st  with nvff and you are most welcome so give me a call and I can give you the list of lodging places that dave is going to send me and or call me as I am not very good or fast at typing and do much better on the phone . its just easyer ? .  the iterim list of lodging starts at 115.00 and goes down to about 39.00 a night  . so give me a call and we can discuss travel plans . i.e when and what route we will be taking . or maybe you can drive up with me and sarah . so lets talk.   ps I think we are leaving the day before may 1`st  witch is a friday after work ! so we don;t have to do all that driving in one day . end ! .....
Thanks for the welcome and the good words. I plan to fish every free weekend and go on some outings with the club, NVFF. Bono, I'll definitely take you up on specifics... or better yet, a guided day on Putah. Richard... we'll get'em next time!
It'll take a bit of time but it'll come. The Yuba is also quite a tough river and sometimes the fish just don't co-operate so well. We should get out sometime.....although I must warn I am pretty new to the game too so may not be much help!!!.... but am always willing to hit the water. Even though Putah is fishing slow we should hit it up in the evenings if nothing else you can work on mending etc. and work on the the skills that will hep you catch fish wherever you go!!!

That would be great! Just let me know in advance if you ever plan to go... and I can make it happen. I love Putah creek. As you said, I can use just some time on the water to work out some of the kinks. Keep me posted...
Alistar if you guys dont mind if i tagged along on one of your putah trips? I dont even know what mending is and since my surgery ive yet to go flyfishing and I bought a new 4 weight toooooo
kyle pm me you,r phone # and or call me my name is richard I live in napa if it,s not to far out of my way you might be able yo take me into picking you up next time I go to putah creek. Im no pro maybe not even as good as alistair definitely not as good as alistair but generally don,t like to fish alone
Don't let Allastair fool ya, he's got game, more than he lets on. Fished with him on the Yuba this week and he managed to stick some fish on a dicey kinda day. Still prefer the spotlight March Brown Emerger over the sucker spawn, but hey...
Allastair, looking forward to getting into some bass at Kelsey with ya! Good times.
