I concur with the idea that the creek needs a break in the winter months. Â Without the planters which have been in the equation for years it would be nice to let the natives
really establish without getting pounded anytime soon. Â Guys used to go out and pluck out
10 or so daily when it was planted. Â I would like to see the brood stock left alone as well for awhile (Above the bridge to the dam) but I know I'm dreaming.
I would love to say what is on my mind, but as a few know i need to watch what i say now. its only posts of days on the water, and helpful hints for me.

I'm totally with Mike,Alastair,Steve an I believe a whole lot of others about shutting down the creek for a couple of months during the peak of the spawn. Maybe PCT may want to look into this as our next item of potential undertaking.Hey guys what do you think?
In getting a chance to speak with Roger Bloom of DF&G, I remember his opinion being that a closure for trout spawning would be very difficult right now, especially with this major undertaking of regs change just passing.Â
You guys are so predictable! I wrote the winter repot card just to get you all riled up. What a laugh!!! But, seriously though I'm glad that it brought up the issue of closing the stream for a couple of months durring the peak of the spawn! That woud be awesome. Everone take a deep breath. Ha Ha.
The thing is, most flyfishers are witty and you lot are no exception. The pleasure is all mine.

Hey Maybe you should join PCT and come help out on the creek sometime, you will find out that we are pretty decent blokes.

they need to just close down putah for 3 years and then open it up to 0 fish kept and barbless hooks( 0 treble hooks) ONLY all year round after that 3 years and that all castmasters and the panther martin genre have to be single hook barbless(cut off 2 of the 3 hooks)...and ever since i picked up fly fishing and tying it steered me in the right devine angling direction and i would also like to say ban the use of spinning rods n reels too on putah, but i would never endorse that kinda talk since thats how i started out fishing and how i grew from just a novice spinning reel fisherman into a heavily addicted full fledged intermediate fly angler looking to go pro on the day i lay in my death bed...i actually totally agree with pit and appretiate his advice...i cant stop anyone from doin anything they want to do even if it was sum1 out there hangin a big ass worm off a big ass hook with their big ass ocean pole so ill leave that up to the DFG but all i ask is if and when you DO catch a fish from this beloved putah creek of our then please treat that fish as if it were your own nutsack, pat it on the ass if thats what ur into but just treat that fish like a newborn baby...oh, and PICK UP UR @%# $&%@ &%^$ING TRASH!!!!! {{fish on}}

I currently live in McCloud, so I won't be joining the club. However I do pick up a good couple of pounds of trach every time I hit the creek, and all the rivers I fish for that matter. Sometime I find so much trash that I cant carry it all in my vest pouch so I try to consolidate it in a pile up on dry land for you all to collect in the future. If you see piles of trash and wonder what the heck....that was me. Next time I'll try to remember to bring a trash bag to drag around with me. Peace, Pit

Pitt your a lucky son of a ------ to live in a place like McCloud! Hows the upper sac fishing these days? McCloud is my deer hunting stompin grounds,we spend alot of time near medicine lake and tennant.
The upper Sac has been in good shape, but I prefer the Pit...I'm only a half hour from access 3. I also prefer the McCloud below the dam over the upper Sac. I find it to be more consistant fishing and bigger fish. Although some people do very well in the upper Sac in the spring with as many as 100 fish per day on the hook, but I've never had that experiance...just hit or miss. I'm still new to the area and I'm looking for tips. Got any? I'll be sure to return the favor!

To get back on topic about the closure for spawning, what if we just did it grass roots style and make our own closure? This is how it could work 1) have civilian monitors who check the river once a week durring the winter for active spawning 2) print cheap laminated signs which say please dont fish from this date to this date. Say that the civilians of the area have proposed a volunteer closure of the stream and give an explantion why. Inform them that it is not manditory or punnisable by law but their compliance is requested by the people 3) have the monitor go to the creek on the weeends and pass out fliers and educate people, you may be suprised how many people may just put down there rods to help you 4) post on all the fourms in nor cal that Putah creek has been closed by citizens for spawning from a certan date  5) get people behind the movment ... A volunteer closure of a sensitive ecosystem is something that almost all flyfishers can get behind. 6) make it realistic, like a month durring the peak of spawn and dont sweat the little stuff or try to take it too far. 7)get the DFG and local business behind the movement; if the creek becomes what we all know it could be the local businesses and the DFG will both make a boat load of money off the fly flishing industry.
For the future I see a fully stocked fly shop with waders, rods the whole gammet where the "deli" is by the bridge. The RV park is now a fly fishing resort with cabins and the creek has 15,000 rainbows and 7,500 browns all over the place. The mud snails have all died off due to some kind of foot fungus that one of us introduced into the water while wetwading in the summer of 2010. And last but not least some joker released 1000 giant golden stoneflies at the dam and they took hold and now they are everwhere.

You're dreaming... Although I like your dream. You wanna kill off all the mud snails? Get Brian to wetwade, but it might kill off all the trout too.
This is what Putah Creek Trout does. Go to the PCT website for more complete info. The regulation change that just happened didn't happen by accident...it was through a huge effort put forward by PCT. PCT has ongoing efforts working with DFG to "manage" the creek as best as possible. I know you said you live a long way off but that doesn't mean you can't join PCT and help the creek out??
Cheers
Alastair
PS I too, like Bono and I'm sure others, am very envious of where you live. Only been fishing a year and never fished the area but will some day soon!!

All great ideas. PCT has put a lot of hours and manpower into making this work, and many volunteers drive 3 hours each way to make this happen. At some point, the rubber meets the road, and the only way this happens is for people to physically put aside some of their time for the cause . . . perhaps a weekend if the drive is long. Last weekend, 8 people donated to time on Sunday to post new regulation signs, surveillance signs, talk to anglers on the river and educate 3 anglers who were prepared to bait fish out of season.
in the long run the effort counts who can push these plans into action. Your thoughts and ideas are valid and very thoughtful as well as holding merit. Thanks for your input.
I've been to the website and I'm aware of all the hard work you guys and gals have donated to the cause, and I humbly thank all of you. I will be making a money donation this year, however it will be hard for me to attend. If things change for me I will certainly join the group. Good work on getting the regs changed, that is really huge!
