Hi everyone, does anyone have experience on the East Walker or Hot Creek, I 've got family that is planning a trip out here and want take them there. Is it best to go in May or later in the year? I saw a program at the Pleasanton Fly show that said May was a great time for cuthrout, I want the visiting folks to have the best time and opportunity to catch fish so I would truely appreciate your advice.
any time on the east walker is a good time. its fishing very nice right now. flows are really good too.

East walker is flowing at 23, hot creek is at 10 cfs. these are very low flows for these rivers and fishing in my opinion would be tough, But defenitly doable if you put in an effort. The owens above crowley would be a better option, Its at 129 cfs wich is good and water temps stay up due to hot water from hot creek wich enters the upper owens. If you choose to fish hot creek be prepared for highly "technical" fishing, the fish won't fall for something less then nearly perfect. Summer and fall are the times to fish that area in my opinion.
Dr B, we gotta get an eastern-side trip in this coming season. What do you say?
KW - the doctor is right, the Owens should fish real well right now. Lots of opportunity. Hot Creek is thin now, but can fish well if you come up with the right patterns and presentation. Its not rocket science, but not a lot of room for error. Keep in mind that there are a lot of fish per section, so don't be so quick to leave a beat before you fully explore it. Think small in your selection. The "rock" riffle and the "fence" can be epic!
Definitely hit the E. Walker too. This should all keep you busy while on your trip.
Bob, I cannot confirm or deny that rumor at this time. Yes there is a unifisher trip already planned from june 30th to july the 11th. I'll be fishing the owens valley/mammoth area. This will be the 4th year of what has become my east slope pilgrimage. Some may think spending that much time tent camping and fishing alone is a bit odd, But I have come to actually enjoy it a great deal. It's going to be a great sierra season boys !
Dr. B, though my busiest time of the year, would like to maybe join you for a few days. I do understand the "lone camping" concept. Can be pretty cool. Nice to be able to go where you want, when you want, without a consensus. You have to hit the San Joaquin River behind Mammoth if you haven't already. Awesome water and surroundings. Plus lots of wilderness exploring on the trail system (bring a day pack or larger for an overnight?). Perfect time of the year for hitting the pocket water with dries.
well crap i looked at them the other day and they were at 80cfs, man what happened to that flow. oh well. sorry to out that out. but it was flowing at 80 cfs.
so ya when is this backpacking trip going on.
