Hi, i recently moved to Davis for school and i have been reading a lot about Putah. I do not have a fly fishing rod, only a few dry flies and two home-made one's i made after learning from a fly fishing book. I only have a spinning rod but i read of a way to fish fly's from that. If anyone has any suggestions on where/when to fish putah please let me know, or if you'd like to go fishing on the weekends i'm always free.
Some info:Hooks must be barbless, newly designated catch and release area( so awesome).I believe the fish are just finishing the spawn cycle, guys, correct me if I'm wrong about my timing here, so be aware of the redds so as not to stomp or disturb the seasons eggs. In winter, Midge patterns( Zebras and RS2)& BWO patterns, small ones, are a must, maybe something bright depending on water clarity, and San Juan worms can produce after rains. There are pay access sites, most park alongside the road and walk in. The flows vary dramatically seasonally, it is a completely different fishery in the summer, a LOT higher flows, so winter can be a great prospecting time. It seems nymphing is the way to go on Putah creek, as it warms you can have success with various caddis patterns( fox poobahs, green/tan rockworm)mayfly nymphs and the usual arsenal of Copper Johns/Bobs, Hares ear, Brassie, etc,.. Hike the creek, Look into the "Putah Creek Trout" site, And seriously consider hiring Bono(this is his site) to guide you, can really accelerate your learning curve. Finally, PC is infested with the NEW Zealand Mudsnail, an invasive species. Make sure you take EVERY necessary precaution not to spread should you dip your boots in other waters. Frezing boots/waders overnight is a standard practice. Hope this helps, might see you out there before long, i'm the 6'8'' guy with the tattoos, name's Toby. Good Luck.

Thank you for the suggestions....i'll probably come check it out sometime this weekend....i'm in the market for a fly rod/reel and i would love to hire Bono...once i save up enough money....thanks again for the help. Hope to see you out there. I'll probably be wearing an orange hat most of the time i fish.
check sports authority/ sports chalet if you want to find a decent rod for low price. warning: do not get the stony creek reel. that was my first reel, and if you dip your reel in water, high chance sand gets stuck in the mechanics of the reel, causing the reel to make weird noises/ messs up your retrieves/drag. Go with the Sage 1650. Its 99 bux right now just about everywhere.
