Lower Yuba trip 12/15
Permalink

African Angler, Packrat, Brian Clemns and I all felt a sudden illness coming on and decided to take a day from work and recuperate on the Lower Yuba yesterday.  It was a good decision, because despite the weather forcasts, it ended up being a nice day.  Just as well, the weather forcast kept all of the sissies off the water and we had the place to ourselves.

The flows were at 750, which was the lowest I've wever seen on the river.  The water is gin clear . . . Alistair was debating which brand of gin all day.  We got into some reasonable fish and had a couple of large fish get away.  There were a few rising fish, but my guess is most were chasing emergers as they came flying several feet out of the water.  Believe it or not ,we did see a Skwala yesterday!!!!!

Brian showed us he was ready to go, meeting us at a Starbucks in Sacto., already dressed in his waders and jacket at 7 AM.  The guy in the coffee shop thought he was in his Halloween costume.  He didn't know what to make of Alistair's Pink Crocs and refused further comment.

We went from the bridge all the way up above the UC property.  Fishing was active in the morning and then slowed down, but fish were hooked at all parts of the river.  The rainbows have eaten well during the egg bite, that was for sure.  A fun time was had by all, too bad Rich and Brian missed out on the oil can stop along the way.  Alistair and I agreed it was most refreshing.

How is our friend across from the UC property doing? Is he still pulling out his gun? Sounds like a good time.

One of the reasons I don't fish the Yuba anymore.  These days I'd end up pulling my own in response then it would probably just turn ugly real quick.

Next trip you guys should keep hiking up river.  The tail out leading into the "first" run below the narrows will make you smile.biggrin

Our friend was not up there.  personally, I have never run into him.  Apparaently, their behavoir caught a lot of heat from fly fishers at one of the SYRCL meeting two weeks ago.  Maybe they got the message?

I have fished further up, and yes, some great water.  We were running out of time and started working back.  The funny part of the trip happened before we even hit the water.  After arriving under the Parks Bar bridge, I had to make a run into the bushes to take of nature's business.  As I'm in the middle of things, here pops this roughly 70 year old lady out of the bushes like 10 feet from me.  A rather embarrassing moment to say the least.  My face was Benjamin Moore color 2007-10, Million Dollar Red !!!!

That was no accident. The yuba lady has been surprising unsuspecting men trying to answer nature's call for years. The word on the street is that she's drawn, like a moth to the flame, by the gentle sound of tinkling.

Abel, that was hilarious! It's a close race between Jeff Dunham and Dane Cook for funniest comedian.

Cliff,

That's the saddest and most embarassing part, it wasn't the sound of tinkling drawing her near . . .

Hahahaha. Now that's good stuff. I hope you were doing what I think you were doing (#2), and not the other thing (#3?).

I'm guessing since Katie didn't put out, Brian's party sponge saw #3 for quite some time. Too vulgar?

I'll move the subject along a bit here.  I didn't charge my camera battery before we left, and had not realized that I was almost out of juice.  Especially since I have caught so few picture fish the last 6 weeks.  Since Brian has become picture-shy with non-Putah shots, here are two that I was able to take that day.
