While waiting for the compulsory potatoes to cook this evening, I was passing the time by thumbing through the pages of the Californian Departments of Fish and Game rules and regulations for freshwater sport fishing and I came across this exciting piece of literature in the back of the leaflet.
Up till now, I had been fully aware of the diversity of your trout species in Northern California thanks to Ralph Cutters and his excellent book on Sierra trout. However, it had never occurred to me that it could be turned into a sort of personal challenge and an excellent excuse to get into those more remote locations that some people might avoid. In Ireland, we only have Browns but the variation in their coloration would vary greatly depending on the habitat. It was a buzz to get a brown regardless of the size with distinct patterns or color from different river systems. The idea of fishing for completely different "species" / "sub species" of trout in the one general location is something that I very much look forward to. As Cutter stated if might prove very difficult to tell some species location in the Kern system apart!
Have any of you guys manged to catch six or even better all eleven?
Do you think eight of the species might be a possibility in a year, given their geographic locations? I'm lucky enough that my wife is a forester so backpacking into these locations is not a problem neither is trying to persuade her to go into the great outdoors for a weekend.
Regards,
Denis

I just can't believe an Irishman is cooking potatoes??? I think we should have a PCT Heritage challenge. So far we could have an Irishman and a South African. WHo else?
I'm definitely up for a challenge and after reading about places like Evolution Valley and Goose Lake basin I think its something that will not only cover the fishing urge but also the need to get out into the great outdoors. Plus, backpacking is a relatively cheap past time but getting the time off might be a bit more of a problem.
I think it might be time to start getting the maps out!

I have 4 of the 6 so far and my father in law has already caught 6 and is starting again next year on a 2nd round of the fish he has not caught yet. If you need any information on a certain fish let me know, we have been to most of the areas where they are native.
The heritage trout challenge I think comes down to how much free time and how much driving your willing to do. Iasc if your new to this area theres more water then you could ever fish in your lifetime in the sierra neveda mountains. Follow any hwy. into the hills and you will find trout. Great backpacking, spectacular views. I'm already planning next years trips !
As a point of useless information, well over 100 individuals have met the 6 challenge. Up to the 100th, you were sent a plaque denoting the accomplishment; now I guess its just too common and a certificate is the reward.
P.S. I'm part Cherokee
