So I spent Sunday on the Trinity. First time up there and man it's beautiful. Any how, it was cold most of the day, upper 20's in the AM. I have a pair of Orvis convertible mittens that seems to do a pretty good job. They're fleece and are pretty warm and dry pretty quick if they get wet. I'm curious to see what else is out there, or what some of you guys like to wear this time of year.
Good choice! Though, I do like the Simms Thermal Pro Half Finger Gloves with Nailhead Fleece as my main selection. They're not Windstopper, but they dry quicker and still keep you warm when wet. Simply wring them out and you're in business again, immediately. I find that the Gore membrane between the two layers of fleece retains water much longer and is more difficult to dry. Great for windy days though! I think Simms is heading toward all Windstopper material for gloves next year. Much more compelling story (hook) for selling product. Too bad, they're not listening to their dealers.
The Thermal Pro Nailhead Fleece Half Finger Gloves are still available for the time being though.

Got a pair of Simms convertable mittens 40% off the other day (Thanks Mountain Hardware for a great Simms sale) Anyway didn't really think I need the mitten part and was worried about the extra bulk being in the way. I was going to return them for the sraight half fingers..... got out to go fish before MTN Hardware opened and it was 17 degrees out!!! 3 hours later it was 21 degrees and and was thanking my lucky stars I hadn't traded my mittens in.
That said the fold back pieces do get in the way but during hikes to different spots in icy weather they are real finger savers.
Anyway my 10 cents worth....

Best gloves I have used are simms windstoppers. Just be carefull if ya end up caught in a rain and snow storm trying to dry em over a fire next to the silver fork as they melt quit easily . I think there 35 bucks, A pretty decent price for some good gloves.
The Simms foldover mitts are worth the extra couple of bucks! Yeah, the line does hang up on it from time to time when folded back, but the added warmth certainly helps between holes.
