We got back from our Montana run last week. This year we tried something different, going down to Dillon in the fall. We had an opportunity to fish the Beaverhead, Big Hole, Ruby, Poindexter Slough, Red Rock and Big Sheep rivers.
We found a fishing lodge called the Great Waters Inn located on the Big Hole in Melrose. I would highly recomend this place to anyone. Reasonably priced and a great facility with good fishing right out the door. Also they had a great mancave for post-fishing relaxation.
We did two days of drift boats and 4 days of wading on our own. The fishing was very good, but not great. The Beaverhead had a ton of moss and weeds in it and you really had to pick your spots. Poindexter was very weedy and slow. The Big Hole was very low, 250 CFS, and the fish were very spooky in these conditions. The water had turned in Ruby Dam and the water coming out of the dam was very milky and cloudy with about 1 fooy visibility. Big Sheep fished very well. It reminded me a bit of the Little Truckee. We got 4 days of 85 degree weather, but it dropped to 55 degrees on Sunday with 35 mile an hour winds. Tough conditions but the fishing was okay.
I did break my personal record for Whitefish, both in size in numbers. They don't look down on Whiteys back there quite as much as I think we do out here. Here are a couple of pictures of the Big Sheep, some fish and the infamous Great Waters Inn mancave. All in all a great trip.

Fishing isnt about catching fish, its not about who caught the most, or who caught the biggest, its about the experience that you have on the water, and the life long bonds you make with others on the journey to becoming a better person inside.
You got me jealous Bob! I was planning on visiting family up in Montana at the end of summer, but I started a new job, and have been busy ever since. How were the wings in MT?
