Im heading for the american monday with a friend and need some advice : do I swing without a indicator and how well does that work verses nymphing under a indicator?. annie suggested both ways. what's your opinion other than hold on and fish and expect a big hit if you get one. by the way were hitting the area around the nimbus dam
any input would be greatly appreciated such as leader length number of flys ect.
Jim Zech wrote a great article in the January 2004 issue of California Fly Fisher just on this topic. I think you will enjoy it. Click here to read it.
I fish both styles. If the water is more conducive to nymphing, I'll fish a nymph. If I am fishing open water, I'll swing.
If you choose to fish the Nimbus basin, you can use both techniques. If you swing, a sinktip line will be the best way to your fly down to the appropriate depth. Most people who I know who still fish there use type 6 or type 8 tips since the flow is very fast. If you nymph, be prepared to weigh down your leader.
As for nymphing leaders, I would tie about 9 feet of straight 3x leader to my butt section. If I would be fishing a second fly, I'd add up to 24 inches of tippet for the dropper.
I don't know what the buglife is like at the basin, but I have been doing well with a #6 Rubberlegs Stonefly with a #16 caddis dropper on the Yuba.

PS Even though I fish both styles, I prefer the swing.
I've fished the American (between Watt and Sunrise) the last 2 Sundays with some success. But you're probably on the water right now so let us now how you did.
Thanks for the reading link . I've read all the lit on indo verses drift on that link and am ready to do some hands on and give it a try. I'm sure the drift will need some work but rather than developing any bad habits and not know that I am doing so it would be great if someone was willing and knew their stuff re swinging drys or nymphs ? could take me or meet me on the river for some steely fishing. sounds like it would be a lot of fun . I don't know if its that involved or do ya just teach your self ? I hooked a steelie when mx19 took me vince and sarah up to the feather for that fund raiser for pct and the thing jumped than ran and then it was over gone kaput nomore damm. I think I forgot to set the hook. anyways it would be great fun to hit the feather again but in all fairness it would be better if my sarah was included like on her day off a weekend if anyone has the know how droip me a pm and let me know your interested untill then Ill be doing it on wing and a prayer ive put some time in on the american and the feather earlier this summer and only got one hit and that was that time on the feather in orer ville so with winter coming im ready Im pretty sure you veterans can tell when a new guy gets on the forum
