Alrighty then. Well I just got back from the creek. I too finally caught multiple fish this afternoon. None bigger than 9". At access 5 and all within a 10 minute period. I've almost been fly fishing for a year now and I've read a few books and asked a few questions on the board but, spending time on the water is where I've learned the most. This situation sure makes me feel uncomfortable as a rookie. Some people just need to zip the lip and relax. I saw this discussion start before I headed out to the creek after work and I almost didn't go because.......well I didn't know if it was a good idea or not. But I went anyways and had a great afternoon.  Are we trying to grow the sport? Trying to keep Putah to ourselves? I'm just fishing. Period.
Mike, I don't know what kind of paint you are sniffing, but we don't do this for the free food. People that come out to these events get to meet other members of this board and maybe participate in other things with PTC.  A guy has a good day and you came on here an crashed this thread with your whining. It has been my experience that the whiners  are the ones that don't get involved.Â
Richard, don't listen to Yukon... You're not hurting the fish because they are small... If that was the case, then we better not fish the sierras anymore.
MAN O MAN, i am gone from cali for a week, and this all starts up again. ok regulators mount up. lol.
sick of the mumbo jumbo crap that is going on here. just get out there have some fun catch some fish and if u see some trash pic it up.
wish i could be there this saturday. ill be back in cali today, but unfortunately at 8am on the 19th ill be at the CHP academy taking my first test to become a CHP officer. if it isnt that long then ill be there with my bells on and booties on to pick up trash. just dont know how long this test will be.
if i do come anyone going to fish afterwards. cuz ill have my fishing stuff with me ofcourse. lol

I think conflict between each other detracts from one of the things I love about this sport 'comerroderey and friendship helping the creek is going to be obtained through learning from each other of wich I have plenty to learn . Ive only been doing this a short time . and attempting  corroperation  amoung each other and not demonizing some one  on eather side of the fence I am  interested in fish mortalitie as im shure many of us are but am not shure weather im doing harm by streesing the little ones or not .(( is that spot that iv'e been fishing a nursery of sorts do sertin spots hold mostly small fish and other spots hold mostly bigger fish I don't know!))) a  fishbiologest I talked  recently suggested that I was harming the fish uses the slim on its skin as its immune systeme and any dirrect contact with your hand  offends that layer . not good ! espeacially on a young fish so mike point has some validity furthermore I could go on but ill stop we all bring something to the game lets not loose sight of that . Theres a lot of helpfull information to be gained from one another . Im going fishing any one want to go. just give me a call (707) 294-4738 and ask for richardÂ
PS see you guys on saterdaycleanup and lets leave the egos and hard feelings at home

That said, I would like to work more with conservation-minded fisherpeople and put pressure on the powers that be to maybe save the wild trout, salmon, etc. who are all seriously threatened-- on Putah, Klamath, Russian, and on and on. anyone read the Chronicle over the weekend about the Klamath situation?? We need to step up pressure and if we work together the dams on Klamath might actually come down before the fish are all extinct!! Anyone more knowledgeable on this area-- I would love some advice on how to be more active in helping!!

Â
Prettyfly,
Start out small. Â If every fisher took a little ownership of their home waters, we can make a huge impact collectively. Â Join Putah Creek Trout. Â Our fledgling organization can use anyone with a little enthusiasm. Â We have a bunch of projects that need a champion. Putah has problems with sedimentation and we need to educate people about fishing for spawners during the winter just to name a couple.
You can also join groups like Caltrout, TU, CSPA, and NCCFFF. Â They are all working to restore our fisheries.
I think the best way to release the small fish is just bring em up to you raise your rod tip, reach down with some hemo's, shake the barbless hook loose. The fish never gets touched. Bigger fish may require a bit more handling. Nets are best for bigger fish. Hopefully when all is done one dosen't have oh say a peice of lip or skin attached to the fly after release, But it dose happen. Fish are going to die on occasion, That can only be minimized. Richard I like your enthusiasam for flyfishing ! Now everyone should quit the bitchin and go fishin.
As someone that spends more time than most on the problems that affect PC and the fishery, I can say that the trash problem is almost insignificant compared to the other problems facing the creek and the fish. I can also say that I'm leading this crew on Saturday and grateful for those that are helping.
I talked a fish biologist the other day she was in sport chalet or some thing like that getting waders so they could get in the water with net s  and net  these  type of endangered  fish down in lodi some where any why long story short we talked for a couple of minutes about that very subject and she seemed fairly confidant that catch and release did more harm than most fly fisher realize. and that by handling the fish at all with bare hands removes significant amounts of the slime . And that slime is what they use as sort of. or part of there immune system .Hu' trip ha . I didn't know all that . and she went one to say that that by  handling with your bare hands  it ends up killing more of them than most realize !If you take into account that they are potentially very stressed   . I don't know how true all this is . I don't know . I think it's good to consider and that it might be true . But then what am I do quit fishing . I find it difficult to remove the hook when there in the net let alone when there bouncing around in my hand . cause the dame things are so dame slippery . Of corse theres always the old hold the line with one hand your forcepts  in the other. and do it that way obviously that requires some work to develope the right technique but it solves the problem with slime being removed  .And if anyone wants it. the phone # She gave me her business card . Ask a simple question and look what ya end up getting a dame novel

Just remember to keep your flies in a closed pocket. You may feel good about the safe release, but you'll be kicking yourself when you lean over and your fly box is floating down the creek :P
Yeah I have heard wet hands and net, if used, are must.
It is a bit sad that there are flyfishers out there that feel the need to criticize so harshly. Richard is a great guy and like me is relatively new to the sport.
Learning all the proper techniques, steam side ettiquete, fish handliing etc. is intimidating enough without being barked at by disgruntled members.
Other than that I will take this opprtunity to say thanks to the large majority of the rest of you guys and gals that post. Your help and guidence is always appreciated and special thanks to Steve and the rest of the Putah board for all the hours that you put in as well as Bono and Steve (mx19) for all you classes etc that you put on, your patience and willingness to help is greatly appreciated by rookies like myself.
Cheers,
Alastair

Ha. Did that last week. But it was my wallet that fell in.
