been fly fishing for about a year  and hit putah this morning at  about 7;30 at the bridge and stopped at 5;30 and probably lost count about 10;30 caught to net at least 8 and lost another 7or 8  . one ran down stream and I thought I could turn him not .another I forgot to set the hook lost him to most were small a couple larger . waded out to the island and spent about three and a half hrs just working that area lots of good water then fished down from there to the bottom of the riffles caught more there and lost some to  don't know how many in total lots of fish . I think im learning how to use  a indicator and where to cast to .next hurdle start catching bigger fish  o ya used a # 16 or 18 tan cadis pupah  and a # 20 zibra midge / and a red midge . The fish gods were in my favor . and the flows being at 450 didn't hurt either . and yes i remembered to fill out the survey
I saw your first one you landed. Good job... You look like you got the technique down. I landed 2 and lost 4... I tried to say bye, but you had your nose in your fly box for awhile, and you couldn't hear me. Did you try at the bottom of the staircase?
Thanks for the report Richard-glad you are having success. Glad you completed the survey-they have been down by half so far this year. Honey moon period over for the surveys, or are prople just not fishing? Anyway, sounds that things are beginning to pick up. This years fish should be hitting the 9" mark by now.
At least one rookie is getting things right.... but as someone said time on the water pays off. Well done Rich!!!

Good going! I was out on Friday afternoon/ evening and had one take at access 5. I need to spend more time out there to get it figured out. Looks like you've been putting your time in. Nice work.
Nice job there Richard! All that training with Mx 20 and Bono is paying off. I recommend that you keep some notes on your calendar for your first year of fishing. It really helps the following year. Write down locations, flows, flies and number/size of fish.
three more today  same spot  I think that tooth pick indicator Im useing is doing a lot to help me hit the zone ' its so much easier to relocate on the line than the other ones ive used
Putah Creek Trout is helping out with the Coastal Cleanup this weekend. We are meeting at Access 5 at 9AM. Saturday 9/19 at 9AM. Hope to see you all there.

If you guys are catching a whole lot of fish and you actually give a @#$%^ about
Putah, get a bag and start picking up some trash instead of trashing the remainder of the trout in the creek.
Mike
I was unaware that I was doing any harm when I was practicing catch and release . I try to handle the fish as little as possible and release them as fast as possible but I have wondered weather this killing or harming them .
no one has mentioned this to me or brought this up. thanks
And instead of assumeing that I am not helping out on saterday . You might want to ask instead of being abreasive I am planning and have been planning on being there but your point has been heard  thanksÂ
O ya thanks for the info otter all ready knew about it

With an attitude like that, makes me not even want to go to Putah for fear of running into people like you! Richard has put his time in on the creek and deserves to catch some fish, why do you have to scold him for that?
Had you been on this forum in the past month or so, you would know about the clean-up that is happening. Instead, you log on here and see richard's post and then tell a nice guy off. Geez...
Why don't you go better serve the creek by telling off the redneck bait fishers that leave bottles/cans of beer around.

I am only considering that since the creek is not being planted this year or at any time in the near future that maybe we place a little more value on the future of the ones we have in there and not go hammering the heck out of them, especially 9 inchers. Â
Although we practice catch and release, the mortality rate on young fish is still higher than you think. I am not saying don't fish, but I do think a vision of the big picture is paramount. Â
Additionally, even though there are cleanup events once in a while there are many who take a bag every single time and spend some time whether there is an event or not. There is a significant number of people who are seriously concerned about Putah and consider it home and don't necessarily think a good day has to have a tally of 20 fish over 18" for it to be valid.  If it does maybe you could just start using marshmellows or velveta.  I don't care if someone thinks I'm a snot or not, but if you want this to be like home then treat it like it is your home.  To those who are fairly new to the sport, the craft of angling is lifelong and multifaceted and is about much more than numbers.
I understand the frustration of this summer being slim to none, but I am lookingÂ
forward to a future creek loaded with healthy and truly crafty natives. Â
Your pal, mike

Nicely put... I agree more trash should be taken away. I'm sure more fisherman could do their part (I know I would, but I have no way of getting out there). Perhaps something else to consider would be keeping a watch out for violators of the previous regulations and hopefully the new ones to come.
-Jon
P.S. Even when I did bait fish, I used actual bait, no food items like velveeta or marshmellows, just worms. Then one day I saw the light and fly fishing became my hobby and catch and release became a necessity (caught too many fish :P). Actually, I lied, I have used velveeta for catfishing. I've also used chicken liver and bacon. But not on any natural bodies of water, this was when I was a kid on my uncle's private resevoirs he made himself.
These are all valid concerns...... BUT Yukon Mike,  if you had spent any time with my husband on Putah, you would know that he is a person who picks up trash every day he fishes and puts it in his backpack and hikes it out and brings it home to our trash & recycle  bins!! So--the way I see it,  you might have said it differently.
That said, I would like to work more with conservation-minded fisherpeople and put pressure on the powers that be to maybe save the wild trout, salmon, etc. who are all seriously threatened-- on Putah, Klamath, Russian, and on and on. anyone read the Chronicle over the weekend about the Klamath situation?? We need to step up pressure and if we work together the dams on Klamath might actually come down before the fish are all extinct!! Anyone more knowledgeable on this area-- I would love some advice on how to be more active in helping!!

I just want to make one point. The creek is fishing well...I had a little trouble finding the normal size putah fish at first , but soon found many of them. The larger fish are their as well just a little thinner this year due to the extra silt and grass that took some of their food supply away....The creek is not fishing as well for most cause they are trying to fish it the same way they always have. When the creek changes so does my plan of attack...   Some people pick up trash, some walk right by it and others leave it behind.I dont complain about I just pick up more.I will say I have been on the water with richard on the feather and he is a picker upper....   good times to all and be nice or santa's going to put you on his naughty list....
This type of bull S dosen't usually start till mid winter. Ya really wanna get some flak Richard, Post a big fish pic this winter. My opinion is this, Just shut up and go fishing ! If you wanna pick up trash then pick up trash if you don't want to then don't. As for the cleanup, Bad timing. theres only limited time for sierra fishing left and I'm hitting it every weekend from now till it starts snowing.

This seem to be heading in to many different directions for my head the bottom line how do I avoid catching the small fish . If that can be avoided ? do I stop fishing the putah untill it recovers !  I would rather not have to do that . But if all I catch is the small ones  mike does make a point . I don't want to miss the point and is it valid . and how can I change what Im doing to start catching larger more resilient fish. my guess is one keep fishing but possibly change locations.move to deeper pools like the one at the bottom of the riffles or some other location on the river and two. use another type of hook / or dropper setup.  I would guess mike suggestion would be to fish another river ?
Richard, keep fishing Putah the way you have been doing it. As for the clean up , if the people on this forum really care about the creek we will see them this weekend  on sat. The coastal cleanup is always in Sept every year, if you can't sacrifice  one day of the year , then be selfish and go fishing . We also have a cleanup in NOVEMBER in case anyone can't remember. I will  post reminders.
