hey guys here's the report from my trip to upper yuba /downie river . we met are guide saterday morn anbd he took us up the yuba about twenty min from the riverside inn . and ralph schooled us in the art of stealth and I kept on getting hits but kept on losing the little guys till ralph told me I need to set the hook. duh I'm still learning. however I did learn a lot about stealth  later after I got bored with only hooking  three inchers  I put on one of  my nymphs and an indicator and hooked a huge bow probably at least 8 or 9 inches wow I think I ;v got a lot to leard . Maybe Ill get luckie and hook up another someday It will just take time ha at least im catching . better than six months ago

P.S thanks for all the help and advice Guys

Thats a great area to fish. True, there are a lot a small fish but it's beautiful up there. I fish there half a dozen times each summer and yes, nymphs will get you some bigger fish. I did pretty well using and larger dry fly (sz. 14) and a nymph tied about 18" below that.  Did you find any browns?  They're in there.

Ha ha, yup a smile would be good, but Richard is doing a whole lot better that I am since our day class on Putah.  I did get this carp the other day...what a kick ...fought forever and measured out at a 29 1/2 inches. But I still need help on beating 2 inches on Putah??biggrin

Rgloft, If the fish on your avatar is a north yuba fish thats pretty good for that river. The sierra fishing has been amazing this year. Too bad it'll be over soon no. Then cabin fever sets in.

Richard, did any of those fly patterns work you picked up from the ranch? Also, how did your wife do this time? She seemed very enthusiastic about getting back in the water. Hopefully she waded with your wading boots this time and not sneakers!

Nice fish man. I think a see a slight grin for a smile?

Keep it up!

The fish on my avatar I caught about twenty five min outside of Marysville above the hwy 20 bridge and maybe a half mile above the bridge what a hike that was all in a days fun honestly the downieville trout I caught was about 8 to 10 inches it was a nice switch from all the little ones .And we used those dry flys  but we were only catching little ones to I put on a nynph and a indicator when I landed the bigger one . this guy that was staying at the lodge caught at least a 18 to 19 incher on a worm and couldent find anyone that wanted it so he tossed it back dead . and he was all braggin about it . what a guy . I found It latter that day layen inthe creek what a waste . bait fishing is the develnono

Hahaha.....yes, can't you guys see he IS smiling?? Just kidding---yep our trip to Downieville was great-- good hamburgers, a guide for a 1/2 day and alot of little rainbows for both of us! But I have to admit, I may have hurt a fish or two because I would set the hook too hard on my 5wt 8'6"; and wheeee! fish would go flying through the air and land in another pool downstream! Yikes!noconfuse I felt bad about it later-- I love those trout and the last thing I want to do is hurt or kill them but they were just tiny and that pole launched em' way too much....damn. But most of them were okay I think.....I definitely need to work on my setting the hook-- especially with little guys!

The guide taught me a hell of a lot-- staring with telling me to buy a new hat because the one I wear is white and he was like, "You don't come down here to look pretty-- get a natural color hat!" evileye Maybe I'll wear Richard's old one since my girly one has been deemed inappropriate.aww And yes-- I'm still wearing my hiking boots with studs in the water. Money's tight right now, y'know? Maybe for Christmas I'll get a "real" pair. Soo much more to learn-- but I'm having fun; that's what matters isn't it??

Having fun is the only thing that matters. As for sending the little guys through the air, Well sometimes flyfishing may not be a gentle gracefull thing all you can do is try to minimize it. I mean lets be honest you go up to a place like the north yuba were you can catch fish all day long your gonna kill a few or send a few flying. I've hit myself in the face with flying fish, I've launched em into the bushes never to be seen again(not without effort on my part to find the little guys).

The best peice of truckee advise I can give is to not go out and have to many ****tails the night before and then sleep all day in the bushes while your buddy's fish.
