Little Truckee Last Week

I was vacationing in Tahoe last week and got out twice to fish the LT. On Tuesday I went out for an afternoon session and got on the water about 3:00. Started at the upper section and got into a fish right away, maybe 3 casts into it. Nice 22 inch rainbow. A couple of casts later in the same run and I get an 18 inch rainbow. I was able to fish for a half hour before the thunder storm hit complete with lightning and hail. I made a run back to the truck for cover and waited it out for a half hour or so. Cleared up and the sun came back out. Fishing definitely slowed after the rain but I was able to pick up 2 more fish lower down stream, another 18 inch bow and a 12 inch brown. All fish caught on Tuesday were taken on a dry fly even though there were no fish showing on the surface. My wife had the camera so no photos from Tuesday. Finished the day with 4 fish.

Oneweight, I may have tied a fly to rival the Lembroughton!

Got out again to the LT Thursday morning and was on the water from 8:30 to 12:30. I was planning on hitting the Big Truckee after the LT but the fishing was good for me again so I never left. I started the day nymphing the upper section with an Andy Burk HBI I tied and did not get into any fish until a ways down stream. I found a nice run and got into a big fish on the second drift. It took me up and down and across the stream trying to get it landed. Almost wrapped me around a rock but I ran across stream to avoid it. It was a 20 inch brown! Had the camera this time but right as I went to get it out of my vest the fish squirmed and I dropped it back in the water and he swam away. 2 drifts later in the same run I hook up again, this time a rainbow. I was surprised to hook up after I had just ran up down and across the run. I got him landed and photographed. Fishing slowed after that so I switched back to the same dry I used before. Ended up picking up 2 more fish but both were smaller and not photo worthy.

4 fish on each outing makes a pretty good day on the LT. I ran into a buddy of mine who guides the LT/Truckee and he was telling me about how bad the fishing is getting on the LT, it's so over pounded by guides and their clients that is affecting the fishing. Yes he's a guide himself but he's aware of the problem and trying to do something about it. He wants the forest service to limit the number of guide permits they are allowing and regulate how many guides can be on the water per day. Also, when he goes out he coordinates with the the other guides he fishes with so they don't overlap. None of the other guides are doing this and he has seen as many as 5 guides and their 2 clients all show up at the same time in the upper section. That's 15 guys on the water in a small area! He is noticing the fish he does catch are damaged, their jaws/mouths are all torn up. The fishing is declining on the LT, we saw this while there on our June trip, very slow fishing when it should have been much better.

This was the hot dry fly. You can find the recipe at charliesflybox.com, search for hi-vis rusty spinner.

Fishing isnt about catching fish, its not about who caught the most, or who caught the biggest, its about the experience that you have on the water, and the life long bonds you make with others on the journey to becoming a better person inside.

Nice fish pic packrat. Man the LT get massive pressure for its small size. As for the thunderstorms, Is it just me or has there seemed to be a lot more this year then last few years ? Seems I'm getting atleast one every outing last 2 months.
