TRUCKEE RIVER!!!!!

not to many posts out there on places to fish. and well i havent posted on one in a while either. figured id give those a heads up, that are looking for a place to get out of the heat, have a great day fishing and wet wading all day. well here it is.

THE TRUCKEE RIVER.........

fishing very well, using stoneflys, size 8-12, my size 8 sqwala nymph that i tie up for the yuba is really working well up there and for a trailor using a pupah size 16 in either tan or olive. both working great in the dead drift, highsticking and even swinging. been fishing it twice a week for the last 2 weeks, average fish is 16-20, with several hook ups with fish over 20 but never landed. as far as numbers average hook ups me and the buddy is around 30 and landing half of those, best day by far was 7/22 when we hooked well over 50 fish, and definitely landed over 30. not gonna give locations on where i am fishing, all i can say is get where it doesnt get hammered and u will get on some great fishing. evening time has been producing some really nice hatches, stones, big mayfly as well as caddis and midges all coming off, find some slick areas and get ready, the big boys come out at night. throw some big drys with a small dry trailor and they will rise out of the deep holes. here are a few pics for your taste buds. ill be out there again on 7/28 and 7/30. and will be fishing it until it dies down, or the steelhead start fishing well on the AR, or the little truckee starts popping off.

ENJOY, just watch out for the GUN SHOW, its in one of those pics. lol

Okay, whatever? . . . . Hey nice fish Brian!!!!!!!  I am so happy to see that you abandoned that pack tan for a T-shirt.  Wondered if you had a social engagement or 2 while you were in the Truckee area?!!!!  Looks like a nice fish bro????  I'll get the particulars from you later.

Bob

Have to make a trip to see my wife's family in Reno, and I have her talked into camping on the Little Truckee and making our visit from there. Curious to know if there are any campgrounds you could recommend. Hope to camp near the river with a pop up trailer and a 5 month old (oh how fishing has changed since my first born), maybe get a little time on the water too. Any info would be appreciated.

there are many out in that area, i would say boca, which is the easiest, no runnin water but u are right on boca, theres one on the east side and west side.

as far as the guiding goes, still working out the particulars, easiest way to put it. MONEY IS TIGHT, AND ITS GETTIN TOWARDS THE END OF THE YEAR. i will have my guide lics starting of 2010, and will start guiding then. but until then just helping out the boys and building up my teaching and training skills and gettin as much fishing, experience, and feedback as i can before i start.

eric the pics and the vids will be up soon.

hey bob, as far as the lady friend we still chat, and we always seem to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, last time we was gonna meet up near glenshire, she was rafting so i thought it would be perfect, she was stoked, she even wanted to try out fly fishing. well come to find out she was floating from tahoe sity to alpine meadows or something like that (hwy 89) then before she knew it after that they went hicking. so never happened, guess i am just gonna have to make a special trip up there without having to fish. lol. but as soon as we hang out. ill make sure that everyone knows. maybe even take a few pics.

well was up there again on 7/31 with alex and his mom. she is a trouper. stuck with us all day, even after a few dunks into the truckee. all in all it was a great day, wasnt 2 hot, not 2 cold in the morning, fishing was slow most of the day but we all still got into some fish. mom hooked 3 all ldrs, 1 on a crawfish pattern and 2 on a sqwala nymph. i tell u what for not ever indicator fishing, she was roll casting and mending like a champ. cant wait to get her out for some steelhead. alex hooked about 10 and landed about half those. all of his came either on a sqwala nymph or some type of stonefly pattern, 90%of the fished landed that day were in the 16-18 range. cant complain with that, and definitely a few fighters in there too. i hooked about 15 fish, landed about 10, most in the 16-18" range as well, very respectable fish for the truckee. but i wasnt satisfied with that. decided to start fishing the faster deeper runs towards the end of the day with a crawfish pattern (which i had been fishing with all day, but not the faster runs) to bring up some bigger fish, well hoping that is was going to. well crossed up stream of a very fast deep run, put 3 shot on the line, on top of the weighted crawdad pattern i tied as well as a tungsten beaded sqwuala nymph, and second drift i thought i got stuck on bottom. that wasnt the case at all. it was a brute, and he definitely took some line on me. what a fighter. the second pig came off of the same type of run just a tad bit shallower. 4 of the 15 fish i hooked came with this type of fishing, and all 4 was over 20"s, only landed 2, but thats all i needed to make my day.

cant wait to take those 2 out again, i had a great time. thanks for coming along guys. maybe next time we can actually hit up in and out in auburn together. lol.

here are some pics from the day.

JUST ANOTHER DAY ON THE TRUCKEE........

It could just be plants from the private SF flycasters club, doesnt make sense to me why they plant on wild tout water tho... damn the loop holes.

Brian is right. There is private land but not private water. No one owns the river, it is public. Property rights end at the high water mark.

exactly, no private water, just private property. It ends at the high water mark for that yr not previous yrs.

I think so... Of course there are private ponds and lakes, so I wouldn't say all waters.

not all waters, only navigable waters. jt explained it the easiest way possible yesterday on the truckee, if a log can float down it, its a navigable water way. if u can raft it it is, if u can float it it is. there is a big issue on the yuba with this, but as long as u stay below the high water mark for the yr you are good. which this yr it got up to 25,ooo cfs, so pretty much that rock was under water. lol

Some clarification, whether a log, raft, etc., can float down a stream now is irrelevant.  Whether a waterway is "navigable" is determined at the time california became a state, so often times you need to do some research to determine the "navigability" of a river.  However, as a rule of thumb, most rivers that are navigable now, were navigable at the time of incorporation.

As to property rights, the landowners actually own the land up to the middle of the waterway, however, under California's Public Trust Doctrine we have an easement to use the water for general recreational purposes up to the "median" high water mark, not the highest water mark.

If you are fishing an area where trespassing is potentially an issue, it is best to know a little bit about the law, and even some of the legal language, e.g., public trust doctine.  I think often times you will find that if you can carry on a conversation with a sherif or warden about it, it will save you an unecessary trip to the jail house.

Nice fish by the way Brian, glad to see your on the water so often, jealous.

thanks jake. hey u and i should be fishing the lower stretch of the yuba soon, RIGHT. LOL.

well i can make u more jealous but i wont post the pics and vids from last week, both tues and thursday, both where great days. got jt out on the water as well as a sac county sheriff on thursday, fishing was great until the front rolled through, then it just died. tuesday was beyond great, the colder nights have really helped out on the water temps from gettin to high.

anyways talked to the sheriff for a while, he told me a few things needed to becoming an officer of the law. so definitely got a lil head of the game and knowing what i need to do. so i am no looking into becoming a law enforcement officer. i will be going to the local chp department sometime this week to fill out an app to get started with the application process which is a 2 minute walk from my house, after that ill get a letter in the mail stating when i will have to take a physical test as well as a 300 question test. like an asvab for the military. then it just goes from there. phyc test, back ground test, and so one, then to the acadamy, like military basic whcih i have done so it will be easy. but yes looking to become CHP. so for all of those that was mean to be back in the day better watch out. lol just playing.

anyways to make u more jealous jake, ill be floating the low flow feather on tues (1000cfs right now) and the steelhead are stacked. cant wait. best half pounder season yet. and ill be back on the truckee thursday. hahaha. suckers....

FISHING IS GREAT ALL OVER THE NOR CAL AREA RIGHT NOW. well other than putah. LOTS OF RIVERS ARE PICKING UP VERY NICE. good reports from lower sac, trinity, even upper sac and mcloud area. get out and fish when u can. steelhead will be hear before u know it. already gettin a few scattered steelies on the AR right now.
