Fishing for Monsters at the June Truckee Trip!!!!!

Hey guys, I just listened to a great podcast at: http://www.askaboutflyfishing.com

The title of the show is "Fishing with Streamers for Trophy Trout". This guy uses articulated flies up to 7 inches long with the average being 4-5 inches long. It's an informative show for sure. When we went to Bobs place in September I had planned on doing a night outing for big trout but it never happened thanks to the Blue Coyote. In June I WILL make a night outing and give the monsters of the Truckee a shot! Big streamers on full sink lines with a short  leader of 18 inches of 20# and 12 inches of 12 # tippet. I just ordered a few of his flies fro his site:

Check it out!

Kelly Gallups flies are the $hit!

If you are looking for a good assortment of his flies check out http://www.feather-craft.com/wecs.php?store=feacraft&action=display&target=JA001

Heck of a deal for what you get.

Also I would highly recommend shoping directly from him at the slide inn.

I finally downloaded my pictures from the MF Feather a couple of weeks ago.  Check these three fish out, are they pretty or what.  Look at how orange the fin coloring is.

The larger fish was 17", the smaller ones around 14".

That river should be in perfect shape in two weeks.  Also . . . there is an outstanding watering hole to stop for a dustcutter on the way home.

That's some great coloring. One time I caught a rainbow that had hot pink fins and an algae green back. What a gorgeous fish it was. Nice fish btw.

Some inspiration for the June Truckee trip. A couple of hogs from Mikey Wier apparently caught in a "HUGE river in a remote canyon in NorCal". Perhaps one of you guys we'll get into some like these...

-Jon

edit: Here's the article (http://www.moldychum.com/home-old/?currentPage=2) posted on June 4th, 2009. Just proof that it might happen this trip...

if those dont have any steelhead strain in it, then i dont know what does. man that hen is way plumped up.

would anyway say that these fish are in prespawn.

Regarding the camping spots . . .  on the LT between Boca and Stampede there is Boyington Mills campground right on the river.  It's small, about 12 spots.  Above the reservoirs, along HWY 89, there's Upper Little Truckee and Lower Little Truckee campgrounds.  Decent spots, right on the river of the Upper Little Truckee.  Fishing is probably marginal, they used to plant here.  The river pretty much dries up here by the end of July as the water is siphoned off for Sierra Valley ag use.

Stampede Res has really nice campgrounds but might be tough to get a space without a reservation but worth checking out. If you're into roughing it you can just camp along the river, there are some good area off Hirschdale road. Exit Hirschdale off 80, go right, the road will fork so stay to the left. Cross the bridge then turn right down one of the dirt roads and you will end up right at the river.
