just wondering if anyone has been up 50 lately or maybe near west or the east carson rivers. wondering if they are fishable right now. if not maybe ill hit up the east fork of the west fork of the south fork or the north fork of the east fork of the yuba. lol.
gonna be having either a 26 yr old female newbie or a 10yr old boy newbie going with me.
any info would be great

Dreamflows shows the east carson at 1,200 cfs. I don't know if that is high as I have never fished that river, Only have drove past it. But overall I think by next weekend most waters will be fishable, Thats just my opion and observations making 5 sierra trips so far since the opener this year. Lots of water in all the rivers and lakes I have seen, Lots of lakes full up to the tree lines. Should be a great year !
Went up the 50 corridor a week and a half ago, pretty much everything was raging. Some of the smaller feeder streams are fishable, and the west carson is probably the most fishable of the larger waters. Pretty slow going when i was there, hiked upstream of the meadow, but the bug activity was minimal, im sure if there are some hatches a parachute adams would keep a newby occupied. Didn't even drive by the east carson because the flows were up around 1200 when i was up that way, and if they are still up that high, like shaun mentioned, then its pretty much unfishable. Sure, like everywhere else you can still pull a fish or two, but is certaintly doesnt fish like the E carson is supposed to fish. Indian valley resevoir might be fun in the evenings.

I'm in S. Tahoe this weekend. 1200 cfs for the E. Carson is too much. Probably won't be until towards the end of June that the flows drop to good fishable levels (<600 cfs). The West Carson is at 200 cfs....that's pretty much perfect flows. I'll be there and on some other creeks this weekend. Warning, stay away from the bridges or you might catch a treble in the lobe. Vultures flock to the bridges awaiting the next stocker dump.
If you like hiking now is a really fun time to hike up to some higher elevation lakes, between 7000 and 8000 and fish ice out. Just sit there with a beer or other debauchery of choice and wait for monster cruisers and chuck a streamer or flying ant pattern at them. This is the best time to see fishing cruising the shorelines. Did this last spring and had a blast.
heading up there anyways, ill give a few rivers a try, red creek, silver fork, caples, south fork, west carson. just to name a few, hopefully ill be able to get the lil guy on his first brownie tomorrow. post and pics will be up soon

so here are the pics from sunday. fished the west carson for a big goose egg, then hit a nice lil creek someone told me about and got into some nice brookies right off the bat, then traveled around a bit, hit the silver fork for a few grabs, but none landed, then went to the lower section of the brookie creek we hit earlier and just slayed brookies for the rest of the day. biggest brookie was the one i landed in the pic, average was about 10"s though. all on black crystal flash buggers, with a few on elk hair caddis.
ill be back up there tomorrow with the lil boy and my buddy george, gonna do silver lake first thing in the am for some brownie dry fly action, then who knows from there. hope to get a hat trick for everyone. ill post pics of the day on friday.

Defenitly those Brookies ain't in spawning colors, They look quit different at that time. Nice size on em but there not very colorful brookies. Almost look like planted brookies. Good thing your doing takin a kid fishing.
those littel guys went crazy for buggers....as i was lifting mine out of the water i had a fish rise while the fly was out of the water......haha good times
no not bear spray or extinguisher, as ac22 put it, its red poweraid.
went up there yesterday and got into some hugh cutties. on the same stream. i had 3 break me off right away. one that was well over 20"s, they would shoot up stream straight between 2 rocks, every single time for 3 straight in a row. finally decided to up it to 2x tippet, yes i said 2x tippet (everything else keep on breaking off). once i used that got 2 right in a row. one for me and one for a friend. ill post pics up tomorrow. no brookies today, it was a short day lived due to fishing in between 2 storm fronts, had maybe 3 hours of fishing then called it a day just in the neck of time. this stream in on fire right now. ill be up there next week once again. need to tie up some more black crystal wooly buggers mine are all gone. darn fish.

yes they do come up to spawn or come down. which ever way u call it. There was no big boys to be found on sunday, but they were all over the place thursdays. funny how just a few days and a lil lower water flow changes the cycle of the fish. as far as the spawning goes, nothing on redds yet, and no redds to be found, be there are definitly starting to get ready in the deeper pools and shelfs. man u toss in a black crystal wooly bugger and they just go nuts, havent had my streamers hit that hard since steelhead season. man i love that feeling. ill post the pics of the 2 that we caught on thursday tomorrow. i think within a week these fish will be in full spawn, so it would be time to hit the lower section of the creek and leave those cutts to do there thing. or maybe put a glo bug on or bead with a dropper and try to pic on some brookies and bows behind them chompin on eggs. ill see when i get back up there.

I just got back from there. It was damn cold, snowed and rained the entire time. Fish are in full spawn...makin beds white tails and all. Ended up walking the creek, looking at the fish and pickin up a ton of trash. Hope everyone leaves them alone to do there thing.
I just got back from Gold Lakes Basin, weather was crummy up there too. Spent a little bit of time on the upper North Fork Yuba and lower Haypress, water was on the high side but very fishable, nothing bigger than about 9". Saw some caddis comming off the water, smaller fish were very aggressive towards streamers. I was really surprised by the colors of the fish, and I saw a pair of what was probably rainbows that appeared to be spawning in the lower Haypress near the confluence with the Yuba. They were about 8-9 inches and chasing each other around, staying very close to each other with their backs coming out of the water much of the time. They didn't appear to be feeding, looked more like courting. There were lots of small fish, some of them were intensely colored. Despite the weather and higher flows the waters were gin clear. North Yuba and it's tributaries would be a good bet right now for anyone heading that way. Some giant midges were coming off the lakes, got some interest on dries as well as nymphs right below the surface on a dropper 18" below the dry. NF Yuba seemed more interesting than the still water.
