Scientific Anlgers Max 752 Waterproof Fly Box

This section has been a little slow recently, so here's my addition:

If you've been thinking about buying one of these new well designed boxes... don't. I've always battled with fly boxes... and found each has its problems. Foam tears, and causes rust; compartment boxes lose flies when there is wind. The only boxes I really like are the CF Designs slit foam ones. I bought the SA Max 752 slit foam box thinking it would be just like a CF box but with a swappable middle sheet and clear sides.

While great in theory, the box falls apart in practice. The biggest problem is that unless you use this for tiny, light dry flies, flies will pop out. The foam slits are just not stiff like the CF ones. I put a few nymphs in there, and every time I open the box, flies that have wiggled themselves loose drop out into the drink.

Sad to see a great design from a good company fail in practice.

Vince

Good review, vince, I also have found the SA boxes to be less than thrilling. I also love my C&F boxes.

Has anyone tried the bugger barn for there streamers?

I have a " Bug Luggage" box and like it. Has the slits, flies stay put. It could have more slots, but it keeps it from being too cluttered.
