Fishing isn't a matter of life and death....
It's much more important.
I'd be stalking PA FF web sites and sending a few emails to shops. I would think a 4 or 5wt outfit would do fine. As for flies I don't know but with your tying talent I wouldn't worry about it. Take your vise too. PB
Well im back from a fishing trip filled with knowledge... I didnt mention this earlier but this was a tryout for the us youth fly fishing team which is made out of a group of 14-18 year olds . We fished fishing creek. we were evaluated on tying, casting, knot knowledge, ability to adjust and of course our fishing skills. im sure that the fishing there is great but, it was hard for everyone there including me. We all fished the same mile stretch of water really hard and the few days before that, the previous team fished it. This made the fishing very difficult and challenged all of us. For those who are not familiar with competiton fishing, it goes like this. First, ill start with the rig. you are not allowed and indeicator or split shot. the leader must be continous meaning that you cant tie your dropper of the shank or eye of a fly, but you have to tie a blood not, or other knot usede to tie your tippits together, and have a tag end. There are 3 flies per rig and they must be atleast 50 centimeters away from eye to eye. now for water to be fished. Beats (a section of water given to an angler that can be anywhere from 15-30 yards depending on the width of the river) are drawn the night before. everyone gets two beats. they fish there first section of water for two hours then switch to their next beat. A feish must be netted, given to the controller, measured and released alive. At this time the angler is not allowed to touch the fish or remove the hook. There is a certain length required for it to count that is worth 120 points and 20 for every centimeter after that. The first beat i fished, i got one brookie that was too small and missed a few. The second beat got me on the board! i got 2 browns 8", and 10". and lost the big one that could have gone 15". While i was there, midges were coming off all day and yellow sallies were coming off from 11-5. not only was i there for trying out for the team, but also for the wealth of knowledge. The most widely known angler there was Joe humphry. i learned out to shoot line with the simplest movement. If you have tailing loops this also works. all you have to do is, "Squeez The THUMB!" it may sound simple but it works! he showed us different techniques and also told us a bunch of stories. There was a post earlier about the little red river in arkansas. i asked him about night fishing and he told us about this one night. while night fishing there around 11, he said he lost what would have been the world record trout and was an estimated 40 pounds!! Not only was he there, but others whos name i forget but the demonstrators had more knowledge then all of us put together. not only did i learn alot, but i also gained some friendhips that will last a lifetime! there were 35 people that tried out for the team and 15 that made it. i am lucky enought to be one of those 15! the next step, 7 of those 15 will head out to the czech republic for the world fly fishing championships! i find out tomorrow if i make that team, but my chances are pretty low since there are many people that have been on the team before and are on the team this year. I will probably make the develpomental team, which is still pretty cool. this team will go to the us mens nationals and to the canadian nationals. This is a great opportunity for me and i hope to continue with the team for the next 4 years! pic 1: morning pic2: joe working the water( forgot to mention this but he used to hold the PA state record brown trout on this creek of 14 pounds caught night fishing) pic 3: morning pic4: trout rising pic 5: brown trout pic 6:seig center which is our accomidations
Good job Robbie. Keep up the good work! If you can avoid injuring yourself in basketball and your fly fishing endeavors you will make the team. Be careful while wading! You know fly fishing can be dangerous. I suggest you stay away from the Pit.
