I doubt that the Hiemlich manouver would of helped. I used to work on those type of boats on the Channel Islands and know that most Salt water fish have a very spiny and abrasive surface to their skins, in some facet or another. Like stuffing a stiff brush into a sock.
I'll assume those kids won't ever fish again.......
