I'm new to the fly fishing scene and will be coming over from Sonoma County to check out the creek this Sat (hopefully). I've never been there b 4 and wonder where I can start out. Anybody out there feel like giving me directions from Santa Rosa? I'll come by wat of Hwy 12. Thank you.
Welcome Ed.Piece of cake. when 12 hits Highway 29 ,take a left heading north. Take the Trancas St/Redwood exit. Take a right at the light heading East. You are now on your way. Trancas becomes Monticello Rd.You basically stay on it for about thity miles. DO NOT TURN LEFT toward Lake berryessa around mile 17 or so, stay on Monticello Rd toward Winters. When you arrive at the bridge, you are here. There are pay-to park areas the next 4 miles, but parking on the road and walking is probably most prevalent. I think Zebra midges and WD40- type patterns are still catching fish, but ask a fellow angler. Additionally, as you mentioned you are new to the addiction let me mention the New Zealand Mudsnail. It is an invasive species that can be EASILY transported from one body of water to another(they are tiny). The rule of thumb is freeze your waders and boots at least 6 hours if you will be using them in another body of water. Having "mudsnail gear" is a great idea to keep in mind.Oh ,Sweeny's sporting goods is off the Imola Exit(just past Jefferson intersection) right as you head north on 29,they can probably give a little local advice..Oh, one more, Putah is barbless hooks( you can flatten the barb with pliers or hemostat type clamps) and 100% catch and release untill April. Anyway, Good luck and tight lines. Toby
