I just read some interesting (and slightly depressing) research on trout vision. Trout see a wider region of the light spectrum, which includes ultraviolet (UV) light. So that olive dubbing I recently used on a blue winged olive I tied will likely have entirely different UV reflective properties than the fly. There is a good article on this here. Does anyone here tie UV-correct flies?
UV materials work. I noticed more takes on my soft hackles with UV colored dubbing has a thorax. Hareline products has a material called UV Ice Dub that I use for often. Some of the Simi Seal dubbings that I use for leeches are blended with UV dubbing. One of my friends noticed more takes on Tarpon flies tied with UV flash than the same flies tied without UV flash.
