Today's Putah Creek Profile (PCP) is of local legend Orvis Remington-Peters. Petey, as he is known to his friends, is a PC original with close to 40 years of experience nailing those Big Monster Fish. Modest to a fault, he claims he has no special skills or techniques to account for his success: "I just pound the water until I connect, then the battle is on".

His favorite water is a well kept secret although he admits you might find him anywhere along the 4.5 mile stretch from Monticello to Lake Solano. Opening up a bit during the interview he coyly revealed "The quality water is wherever you find it". From top to bottom he rattled off some of his hotspots including the boulder pile, the narrows, the hanging tree, beaver flat, and strainer junction.

Petey's most memorable PC experience occurred a few years ago at low flow when he hooked a Monster Buck (he distains calling these fish hogs or pigs) below the bridge that took off down the staircase riffles with Petey right behind. Petey estimated this fish to be 42", "if he were a centimeter" and Petey seemed to be getting the upper hand when he slipped on a small boulder, landed on the back of his head and temporarily lost consciousness. The fish took advantage of this temporary set back and managed to come unbuttoned. He admitted he looked all winter for that fish for a rematch, but it was not to be.

Petey is well known for his steady reconciling postings on the Bono site whenever threads become contentious or down right nasty. His wisdom has stopped the kerfuffle associated with such recent threads as "To Bob or Not to Bob" and "Felt Souls: the Ying and the Yang of Redd Fishing" in its tracks-way to go Petey!

Petey is also an accomplished author, fly tyer and inventor. His book, "How to build a 9' fast action 5 Wt from common garden tools" is a classic. His "Beadhead Burper" is still one of the best go to searching patterns on the Creek, and his "Handbook of Little Known Knots" shows his profound creativity. Two of my favorites are the "Left handed Snarl Knot" and the "Righthanded Wind Knot". Such Genius!

As he approaches his 70th birthday Petey's recommendation for a happy long life is "Keep your secret flies close and your secret holes closer".
