I posted on the carpooling/fishing buddy thread, but I figured I would repost here as well...
Hi there. My name is Jon, I'm 23, and a student at UC Davis. I come from Bishop, Ca and although I have been fishing most of my life, I have only learned to fly fish the past year or two. Let me just say that fly fishing has become an obsession for me; so much so that I don't even want to pick up my spin rod. It's a wonderful sport and I just can't get enough of it.
I just found this website a couple days ago and wow, I didn't even realize how nice of fish Putah has! I really want to get out there and get fishing (the only time I get to fish is when I go home for break; fly fishing only 3 times a year is just not enough, I'm dyin'!) it's just that I don't have a car or know any other fisherman here in Davis. I would qualify myself as a novice fly angler with good basic skills, I just need more time on the water. So if there is anybody out there willing, I'd really love to meet some people and get out to try my luck on Putah. Perhaps gain a friend or two in the process.
I promise not to bother you relentlessly with questions either haha, I'd much rather watch and learn. Message me here, pm me, or email me, fishinman93@gmail.com. I'm just dyin' to get my line in the water.
Hi Jvento, I know that Davis has a fly fishing club. It is called Fly Fishers of Davis. I don't think it is part of the UC. When I was an undergrad at UCD (in the 90s), I would see guys casting in the quad. I think that there might be a fly fishing club through the UCD Extension program.
Good luck with your search. Welcome to the boards.
I'm gonna use this opportunity to introduce myself also. This is my first winter fly fishing putah and just started fly fishing a few months ago. Yes the fish up there are awesome. Anyways, jvento, I am a newbie also and live in Davis and have been going up to putah every chance I get. I'll shoot you an email soon.
Hey guys welcome aboard, if you want to really learn the creek and some good techniques as well look into hiring a local guide (me). I can pick you up and drop you off because I live in Dixon and if you guys get together that will be cheaper you can split the cost. But if you all are on a tight college student budget I totally understand (been there done that!) I will still be happy to give you some freindly advice to get you started though. Greg Bonovich ... all the contact info is on the cover page of this site.
I'll jump on the bandwagon and introduce myself as well. I'm Vince, also a UC Davis student. I've been lucky enough to have family in Montana, so I've primarily fly fished there. I've only fished the Stanislaus here in CA (and Putah a few days ago - I had gone four years at Davis and never known about it).
I'm open to new fly fishing partners too (C&R only, please). I have access to a car, but it is not my own. I love to learn from masters, and teach those newer to the sport. Drop me a line if you want to wet one. My email (partially obfuscated to avoid spam) is "v.s.buffalo (at) gmail (dot com)".

As part of its developing community outreach/education program Putah Creek Trout has discussed with Bono sponsoring newbie group seminars under his leadership and with the possible assistance of other experienced PCT members. Registration fees would go to the support of this Forum (maintaining it is not cost free). The details are being worked out, but we are hopeful it will be useful to those just learning to fly fish or who are new to PC.
PCT is fully in support of hiring Bono as your guide whenever possible-there is no substitute for the individual attention he will give you.

Sounds like a great idea to me. I really want to get a guide, such helpful knowledge. Now if only I could afford one... Hopefully this fits the college student budget :)
Like Steve said we will soon be releasing info about a group effort that should be a great opportunity for alot of you budding Putahites. I also am self taught because of the lack of funding when I first started flyfishing, I think I was 15 or 16. I just asked alot of questions and observed and most of all spent many many hours of "thrashing the water" good luck with your passion, remember persistance pays off.
