Well.....It is good to be back in CA after a long summer of guiding on the South Fork of the Snake in Idaho. I took a week off to spend some time with the family and work on Cast Hope. Now it is time to get back on the water and see if I still know how to guide these Nor Cal valley rivers. Below is my current report on what I saw on the Yuba.
I spent the last two days guiding good clients of mine on the Yuba River. We found really good fishing for Yuba standards with 30+ trout hooked each day. It really doesnt get any better than that on the Yuba. There were a handful of salmon milling around in the deep slots. We saw about 15 each day but not nearly the number of salmon that we saw this early in the last couple of years. I have to imagine that the egg bite is going to be a couple of weeks away. But needless to say the fish still ate egg patterns. To be honest 2/3 of our fish each day ate the egg. So it is becoming that time of year over there. It should only get better in the next 2 weeks as more salmon start showing up and actually get on redds and start dropping eggs. The one odd thing is that there were lots of small fish. Each day half of the fish we hooked were like 12" long with a handful of your typical 16-18" rainbows thrown in the mix.
For those of you looking to get out on the river in the next couple of weeks I have some prime openings still left for the Yuba and the Lower Sac.
My openings are Oct. 2-5, 11-13, 18-19
Early October is prime for the Yuba while mid October is great on both the Yuba and Lower Sac.
It has been a good start to our October season. The salmon are in the rivers for the most part and starting to do their egg drop thing. The name of the game has been to fish the river with the most salmon and tie on your favorite egg patterns. Eggs. Eggs. Eggs. Gotta love this time of year. Check out the quick report below of what is happening in the north valley.
Yuba: The Yuba last week was en fuego!!!! I had the 2 best days that I have ever had on the Lower Yuba since I have been guiding it the last 5 years. I seriously had 2 days over there where we hooked 55+ rainbows on beads. To be honest there are not that many salmon spawning in the river but when you find a handful of them there are plenty of willing trout below trying to gobble up those eggs. What was nice is that the quality of the fish has increased over the last week. Late September it was all 10-12" fish but last week we started seeing more than half the fish from 15-18". The hot flies have been eggs. You can catch random fish on caddis patterns like birds nest and pupahs as well as on rubberlegs.
Lower Sac: The Sac egg bite is not in full swing. There are fish eating eggs over there but it is not gang busters by any means. The river is still pretty average for the middle of October. Lots of 20 fish days. What I have been surprised about is watching rainbows eat nymphs in the middle of redds. Places they should be eating the egg they are preferring the caddis. I personally feel that the Sac egg bite is going to be late this year. There are still salmon rolling around in the deep water and not getting up in the shallows. So it looks like the end of October is going to be prime over there. Now if you can get out there on a cloudy day then they will most likely eat eggs the entire time. But that is a total different story. This time of year clouds and rain make the fish stupid. So dont be afraid to get a little wet because the pay-off could be huge.
Feather: I have spent 2 days on the Feather in the last week and there is a good number of salmon over there. There are a handful of steelhead in the system but not gang busters yet. We were having decent days with hooking random fish throughout the system. Most of the fish are the typical 18-20 half pounders which the Feather is famous for. These fish are hot and pissed off right now. Really bright fish for Feather standards and they are very unhappy when you hook them. There is a random adult around if you are lucky enough to hook one. I had a client land a 26" buck yesterday which was pretty awesome for the Feather standards. On the lower part of the low-flow we are still hooking fish on nymphs while almost every fish at the top is coming on egg patterns. It seems like the word is out though because there are quite a few people out there wading around trying to find some chrome.
Well...............there you have it. The lastest info on our North Valley Fishing Rivers. To sum it up fishing is good and time to get out and test your egg nymphing skills.
If you are looking to do some fishing in the next 6 weeks you can find my limited openings below:
Nov: 8-10, 15-16, 18, 22, 27-30 (27th is the last weekend day open!)
Well it has been a great month of fishing. For those of you that were lucky enough to hit the Feather in the last 6 weeks have experienced some of the best steelhead fishing that I have ever seen. It has been a blast to watch you guys light up when that chrome eats your bead and jumps out of the water. In this email you will find a detailed report on the local fishing on the Lower Sac, Yuba, and Feather Rivers. In addition to that you will find DISCOUNTED TRIPS on selected dates in the end of November and start of December.
It is that time of year again where I am offering a handful of discounted trips on the Lower Sac and Yuba Rivers. Here is the deal.........You get a full day trip at the half day cost. That means you save more than 25% off your trip at a price of $275. Check out the dates that I have below.
Discounted Trips: Nov. 27-30, Dec. 1-3, 6-8
Feather - Epic Steelheading
The month of October on the Feather was impressive. I have never seen so many steelhead in the Feather ever since I have been guiding the river. The salmon counts were way up this year and this meant there were lots of eggs for the steelhead to feast upon. For over a month we were averaging 15-20 hookups per day on the river. It was great fun on 6 weights as these chromers ripped line off the reel. Many guys had their first ever steelhead experience and from that have now turned their attention to this famous game fish. Steelhead Junkies in the making.
What is currently going on........the Feather has about a week left before the major run of fish is going to be gone. The salmon are slowly starting to disappear and so are the steelhead that are sitting behind them. There are still fresh fish in the High Flow so they will continue to keep things interesting for another couple of weeks. If you are looking to wade I would expect to hook a handful of fish in all of the standard spots. The hot flies have been eggs, eggs, eggs, and some more eggs. I have tried lots of nymphs the last couple of weeks with minimal success. The next good fishing on the river will be when the upper river by the hatchery opens on January 1st.
Lower Sac - Excellent Trout Fishing
The Lower Sac has been really good the last month. I know that everyone has been complaining about the egg bite not going off up bye Posse Grounds but it you are willing to go down river then there is still lots of great trout fishing to be had. The lower drifts below Balls Ferry have been fishing well. I have been spending the majority of my time either on Balls to Jellys or Barge to Bend. The best part of fishing the lower river is there has been no one else down there. It literally has felt like a private fishery. Most days on the lower river we have been landing 30-40 trout and hooking 1-2 steelhead. Now it doesn't get much better than that. Lots of fish, no crowds, and a handful of steelhead makes for a lot of happy customers. The hot flies on the lower drifts have been rubberlegs, eggs, tan birds nest, and micro mays. The trout have definitely been smaller than the fish on the upper river but there are still lots of high quality trout to keep those smiles going. The only downfall on the lower river is that you are catching the majority of your fish between 9AM and 3PM. After 3PM you might as well go home as the fishing gets extremely tough.
Expect good fishing to remain for a couple of more weeks on the lower river. Once the winter salmon start showing up then it will be time to head back up to the Posse Grounds. For those of you looking to get out around the Holidays then make sure to take advantage of my discounted trips.
Yuba - Great Month But Slowing Up
The Yuba has been solid fishing but not great. Early/Mid October had some really good fishing on the river. I actually had 2 of my largest days ever on the Yuba during October but things have since changed. The Yuba should get better once we get some rain and consistent cloudy weather. The darker conditions will make the egg and baetis fishing much more consistent. The last time I fished the river was last week and the hot flies were rubberlegs, eggs, and small pheasant tails. We were able to land 3 fish on baetis dries as well. The majority of the fish were on the smaller side and the nice ones that we ran into were on the lower river below Hammond Grove. It seems like the bigger fish were still eating eggs behind the handful of salmon that are still spawning. Most days the last couple of weeks sounds like guys are hooking 20-30 rainbows per day. Dont be surprised if you run into a steelhead as this is the time of year that they start showing up.
I hope all of you are doing well and I would like to be the first person to say Happy Thanksgiving. I know this year I am grateful for my family, the ability to make a living as a fishing guide, and for those of you that have become friends over my last 9 years of guiding. Hope your Thanksgiving is a good one.
I still have Dec. 7 (Wednesday) and 10 (Saturday) open at my discounted rate of $275. You get a full day of fishing at the half day cost. I provide flies, leaders, rods (if needed), etc. Save a $125 and get away from the Holiday Stress. If you are interested email me at ryan@rjsflytrips.com.
Fishing this fall has been plain ridiculous!!!!! The Feather was on Fire. The Lower Sac continues to put out great numbers of healthy trout in December. For those of you looking to get away from the Holiday Stress then what is better than treating yourself to a great day of trout fishing on the Lower Sac or Yuba Rivers. Expect the next 3-4 weeks to have some solid trout fishing on our local valley rivers. The weather has been gorgeous and most days have been in the low-mid 60s on the river. Good fishing and sunshine in December makes for some very happy fisherman.
There is all kinds of good stuff in this post!
* Fishing Reports on Sac, Yuba, and Feather

I hope all of you have a great Christmas. Thanks for another great year on the river. If it wasn't for you then I would not be able to pursue my passion of chasing these beautiful creatures we call fish. I look forward to all of our adventures in 2012!
It is that time of year again where I am offering a handful of discounted trips on the Lower Sac and Yuba Rivers. Here is the deal.........You get a full day trip at the half day cost. That means you save more than 25% off your trip. Check out the dates that I have below.
Discounted Trips: Dec. 7, 10, 15-19, 22-23
Lower Sac - Good December Trout Fishing
The trout fishing over the last week has been really good for this time of year. The last week I have had several days where we have boated between 25-30 rainbows on the Sac. The key has been to find the drift with the most consistent action. The last 2 days on the river I have floated from Anderson River Park down to Balls Ferry. The action has been really good with trout in the 12-16" class. The hot flies have been eggs, small tan birds nest, Hogan's S&M, and an olive micro may. There really has been no reason to change your flies as the fish just bounce up and down your rig the entire day.
What too expect in the upcoming weeks.......as long as we have consistent weather then the fishing should stay solid on those middle drifts. For those of you looking to hook a few steelhead then there are still a handful of chromers down below barge hole. Lots of options for those of you looking to get out around the holidays.
Yuba - Good Trout Fishing Coming Soon
Things are getting close again on the Yuba. For those of you looking for some good winter trout fishing then the Yuba is a viable option in December/January. This time of year we often have shots of throwing blue wing olive dries, nymphing with egg patterns, and even hooking the random steelhead. This time of year expect to hook about 20 rainbows per day on a variety of patterns and methods. Hot flies are going to be rubberlegs, eggs, Hogans S&M, small flashback PTs, and zebra midges. Often times in the winter we run into random Feather Steelhead or the big Winter Steelhead. Only the lucky ones land the big dogs but the truly put all of us to the test.
Feather - Thank You For an Incredible Season!
I am totally bummed that the Feather does not get a bigger run of fish that continues through the winter. It was a fantastic year over there. Seriously the best I have seen in my 9 years of guiding. For those of you that are really looking to find some fish then there are still a handful of steelhead on the river. I have heard some random reports over the last couple of weeks of guys catching a few. The next real good fishing window is going to be after the opener on January 1st. After the opener there should be a couple decent weeks of catching these chromers before the go into the hatchery. Hot flies are going to be eggs, Hogans S&M, Flashback PTs, Alevins, and olive birds nests.
For those of you that are looking into the near future my calendar is open to start booking steelhead trips in March/April. April is a prime month on the river and these dates are going to fill up quickly. Email me if you want dates that far in advance.

Tight Lines!
I fished the Yuba with a couple Sac Club members Dave and Andy yesterday. Fishing was really solid for winter fishing in December. We managed to hook 26 fish and landed about 15. We even managed to find a couple smaller stray Feather River Steelhead. Given the time of year I was thrilled with the results. Not many bugs out yesterday. Hot flies were eggs, pheasant tails, and Hogan's Red Headed Step Child. There we are a handful of fish rising in the afternoon on baetis but not anything that I would call consistent. It seemed like to me that you had to cover lots of water to find willing fish but all of the normal spots gave fish.
I only have a couple discounted trips still left: Dec. 17-19 and 23
There are lots of options between the Lower Yuba and Sac.
Big news...there is some crazy good deals to fish in February. February is a good time to catch those 1st spring hatches. Skwalas on the Yuba and early Caddis on the Lower Sac. So check your calendars if you want to save some great $. Also spring is filling up so if you want to fish during the prime time of March and April now is the time to start booking. Weekend dates for these two months are almost gone!!!!
What is the big news in my life? Well it has been an interesting month. The first week of January I had surgery on my tailbone so I have not been doing much of anything lately. I haven't been able to sit down for 3 weeks!!! But the great news is as of yesterday my Doctor cleared me to start fishing and rowing the boat again. So I guess you can say that my Ass has been cleared. LOL. It will be nice to get back on the water.
February Deals & Spring Openings
During the month of February I am going to be offering select discounted trips. I will be discounting full day trips by $130/day. You get a full day trip at the half day price of $295!!! Check out the discounted days below. Also the next couple of weeks is time to start booking your spring fishing dates as prime time openings are filling up. Open dates below:
February Discounts ($295 full day): 5-9, 11-17, 20-21, 28
Some of the best fishing of the year is just around the corner. For those dry fly fisherman out there the Yuba is going to be prime. The Skwala hatch is a couple weeks away, the March Browns will come in March, and then the PMDS in April. If you want to throw dries to picky feisty rainbows then the spring is the best time of year on the Yuba.
The Lower Sac famous caddis hatch is going to happen in March and April. What most people dont realize is that the hatch actually starts in the end of February. Once the warm weather shows up the Sac just goes off. If you want some of the most epic nymph fishing in northern California then the next several months are the time to go. Spring is the time for numbers on the Lower Sac.
Don't forget about the Feather!!! The spring run of steelhead the last 2 years has been impressive. Last year we saw more big fish and greater numbers of fish than I have ever seen. This is a band wagon that you need to jump on. The Feather River is getting better and better. Prime time for the springers is mid March - early May. These are the hottest fish in the valley all year long. You think the fall is cool the spring fish are even better!!!!
Well that is it. I hope you guys are doing well and getting some good steelhead fishing in. Sounds like there are a lot of fish around this winter.
I fished the Yuba today with 2 of my regular clients. Fishing was solid. Really slow in the morning. By the time we were fishing it was around 9:30AM and we didn't even hook a fish until 11ish. Rough start but after that things started to pick up. We ended up hooking 20+ rainbows and landed 2 hatchery steelhead. There was no real hot fly as we caught fish on 8 different bugs from stoneflies, san juans, may flies, etc. Very litte bugs on the river today. I think the cooler evening mixed with a windy day kept the bugs away. The Skwala Hatch is going to happen really soon. There are already a few out there but not lots of them.
One absolute crazy thing that happened today is that one of those hatchery steelhead ate a Skwala dry against the bank. That is definitely the first steelhead I have ever had eat a dry on that River. I have caughten them on caddis during the spring time on the Feather but never on the Yuba. Really cool that you never know what is going to happen each time you go out there.
If you want to do one of my discounted days then I still have Feb. 7, 9, 11-12 (Sat/Sun), 14-17, 22, 28 still available.
I took 2 of my regular clients out on the Lower Sac and the fishing was absolutely ridiculous. It was seriously the best February day of fishing that I have ever had in 9 years of guiding. Today was one of those days that seemed like nothing could go wrong. We boated over 50+ rainbows, 3 steelhead in the 20-22" range, and caught 2 fish on dry flies. I think I had a little taste of heaven today.
SPRING CADDIS have already started. Today fished like the first of March. There was caddis hatching throughout the day and the fish were on the grab. I think as long as the warm weather holds then there is going to be great fishing on the Lower Sac in the next couple of weeks. If you are into lots of action and pulling on a bunch of fish then you need to get out there. Now all of the trips might not be 50 fish days but there a lot of hungry fish willing to eat your fly.
I still have Feb. 9, 11-12, 14-17 open in the next couple of weeks. They are forecasting a 70 degree day on Thursday and those caddis are going to come off strong with that warm weather. Let me know if you want to get in some last minute fishing for a screaming deal of $295.
Tight Lines!
The fishing on the Lower Sac continues to be really good. This last week I have fished from Anderson to Balls and from Posse to Bonnyview. Both drifts resulted in good fishing. I would say the overall fishing is better on the Lower Drifts but the big fish are eating on the Upper as well. Most days on the Anderson drift has been resulting in 30+ fish days with most of the fish between 12-14". While Posse has been a little less with 20+ fish days being the average but most of the fish going between 16-18". On Sunday we boated 1 21", 2 20", 2 19", and 4 18" rainbows.
Expect the best fishing right now to be on sunny days. When the sun comes out so do the bugs. Currently you have caddis, baetis, and pmds all hatching on the Lower Sac. If you are lucky enough to catch it there has been some solid dry fly fishing down below the Deschutes Bridge. Not big fish eating dries but its still throwing dries on the Sac. That is a pretty rare experience.
The best bugs on the Sac have been prince nymphs, hogans spring fling, olive micro may, and the rubberlegs.
This next week I will be on the Yuba trying to find some fish looking for Skwalas.
If you are interested in fishing this spring then things are starting to fill up. Only 1 weekend (March 17-1 left until mid May. All of my current openings are below:
The Dry Fly Fishing has been the best I have ever seen it in the valley. The Skwala fishing on the Yuba has been solid. Nothing better than aggressive strikes from rainbows blowing up on a stonefly dry. While the Yuba is more known for dry fly fishing what has been impressive is the amount of fish looking up on the Lower Sac. If you hit one of those warm days when the bugs come out there are fish eating on the top everywhere. I have had multiple days where we have literally thrown dry flies for 2+ hours. I have never seen it this way. Now all we need is some warm weather to get those bugs happy again. Bring those 4 weights!!!
What is the big news in my life? Maggie just started walking two weeks ago. It is so amazing to see the progression and learning process that children go through. Even though she is doing the slow Frankenstein walk I am one proud papa. What a fun ride we have begun.
In this post you will find a handful of openings that I have in the upcoming months, a fishing report on the Yuba, Sac, Feather, and of course couple big fish shots from February. Hope you are well and are getting to tug on some fish this winter.
Spring Openings
We are approaching prime time on the valley rivers. From now until mid May the Lower Sac, Yuba, and Feather are going to have great fishing. If you have been putting off booking a trip now is the time to do so. As you can see below the calendar is filling up. Don't Miss Out!
March: 24-25 (Sat/Sun), 26-27
April: 11, 20, 24, 27, 30
May: 8-11, 13-18, 20-25, 26-28 (Memorial Day Weekend), 29-31
Current Fishing Reports
Some of the best fishing of the year is just around the corner. For those dry fly fisherman out there the Yuba is going to be prime. The Skwala Hatch is starting to wrap up and the March Browns will be coming out soon. The March Brown hatch is the best hatch of the year!!! Big mayflies floating down the river get those rainbows really happy. If you are into throwing dries to picky feisty rainbows then there is no better time of year. For nymphing on the Yuba the best bugs have been rubberlegs, copper johns, and Hogans S&M.
The Lower Sac has been really good the last 3 weeks. The caddis hatch is in full swing and the PMDs have already begun hatching. With a plethora of bugs out those Lower Sac fish have been hungry. If you want lots of numbers and good dry fly fishing then the Lower Drifts have been best. But if you are chasing the big boys then you can readily catch 18-20" rainbows up in town. This is literally my favorite time of year on the Sac. With more warm weather coming the fishing is going to be really good. Hot flies have been all your prince nymph variations, micro mays, mercers pmd nymph, and Hogans S&M.
The Feather spring steelhead season is getting really close. I have already heard a couple reports of some early fish in the system. I wont be heading over there for another couple of weeks but I am getting pumped to fish for these little chromers. By far my favorite venue of the valley. If you have not checked out the Feather then the spring is a great time to do that. You will never see a river fish move so fast in your life!!! If its anything like last year then we are in for a treat. Get in on the action from mid March to mid May.
I guided the Lower Feather for the first time this spring on Monday with good success. I had one angler in the boat and we hooked 10 springers in the low flow area. Here is what I took away from the trip. It didn't feel like there were a ton of fish in the system yet. We caught some really bright fresh fish but they were really spread out. Most of the fish were your typical springers in the 16-20" class. No true monsters hooked Monday. If we had nicer conditions then possibly there would have been a few more grabs but I think things should improve in the next couple of weeks. Hot flies were all over the place from small prince nymphs, Hogans SM, and sucker spawn.
Anyone looking to get in on a trip last minute I still have March 21, 24 (Sat.), 26 still open.
The fishing the last 3 weeks has been ridiculous!!!! Literally every river in the valley is fishing lights out. For those lucky enough to have been fishing in April we have had some huge days. The Lower Sac is fishing phenomenal for rainbows, the Yuba was plain stupid yesterday, and the Feather has been putting out solid numbers of chromers. Beautiful weather and lots of fish is making for some really big smiles!
Check out the rest of the post for my limited openings in May and for up-to-date info on the Lower Sac, Feather, and Yuba. This good fishing should remain for through May with these late spring conditions we are experiencing. Great flows and lots of bugs means its time to get out there.
I hope all of you are doing well and getting some fishing in. Stay tuned for my next post as there is going to be a change of direction in the near future. For a hint it involves buying a motor boat 2 weeks ago - starting to guide the Sacramento River for STRIPERS, SHAD, LARGEMOUTH, SMALLMOUTH, & CARP!!!!!! - and not going to Idaho anymore. But there is more info to come.
Late Spring Openings - Limited Availability If you have been waiting to hit the really good fishing then now is the time to book. The outlook for the next 4-6 weeks is looking strong for both the Lower Sac and Yuba. Big hatches of bugs with really fishy flows are going to make for some awesome fishing through May. Check out my openings below:
The Lower Sac has been really good the last couple of weeks. The upper drifts from Bonnyview down to Anderson has been impressive with numbers of fish. Most days we are boating 30ish fish and hooking close to 50!!!!. If you are looking for a bunch of grabs then this is the time and place to be. Lots of hookups on great fish in the 15-18" class. The fishing on this drift has been so good I have not fished anywhere else the last 2 weeks. There have been runs where I am like holy crap I have never caught that many fish in that run ever. It is a really special time of year right now on the Lower Sac.
What I'm really excited about is the Yuba is finally fishable again. For 6-7 weeks the flows on the Yuba have been all over the place from 30K-7K so I have been staying away from this river. But finally this warm weather has made the flows drop into the 2,500 cfs range. This is the perfect drift boat flow and the fish were super hungry yesterday. A nice mix of March Brown nymphs and eggs hooked a ton of fish. The dry fly fishing is going to be good once the water clears. With the amount of March Browns out there right now there is going to be some great dry fly fishing once the fish can see the bugs better.
The Feather River has had a solid spring with most days resulting in 12ish hookups on bright pissed off fish in the 16-20" range. The name of the game this spring has been to fish the high flow. You tie on a sucker spawn and a red san juan and watch out. Crazy aggressive strikes have been the norm and some of the hottest fish in the valley have been showing off with strong moves and impressive jumps. The window on the Feather is going to be extended this year into mid - late May because of the number of fish that are still in the high flow. So expect the Low Flow Section to be putting out solid numbers of fish throughout the month of May. Nothing cooler than wet wading the Feather for spring steelhead. I love California.
I am now guiding for SHAD, STRIPERS, SMALLMOUTH, LARGEMOUTH, and CARP. I have recently purchased a 18 foot jon boat with a 90 Honda to push us up and down the Sacramento River just outside of Chico. Thats right no more oars. Now we can run a drift as many times as we want to as there will be no back rowing with this boat. The SHAD are just showing up so those of you that are looking to do a SHAD TRIP the end of May through early June will be the time to get out there.
I will be guiding all the warm water species through the summer in addition to my normal trout options of the Lower Sac and Yuba. If you haven't caught a striper or a shad on a fly rod then this summer is the time to do that. I will gladly help assist you in chasing the next local game fish. Below you can find my openings and reports of what to expect in the next month.
Shad Fishing & Summer Openings
Prime shad fishing is just a week away. Don't miss your opportunity to come shad fishing on the Sacramento River for a night. SHAD Trips are only $225/evening!!! Also to keep on your radar - once the shad leave then the striper fishing is going to be getting good. So once the shad leave come late June then the Stripers are going to be hungry and ready to eat those clousers. And as always the trout fishing will be strong in June on the Lower Sac and Yuba.
Shad Trips: May 30, June 3-5, 7, 9-15
Striper/Bass/Carp Fishing: June 22-25, 27-28, July 3-12
Trout Fishing: May 30, June 3-5, 7, 9-13, 22-25, July 3-12
So Many SUMMER Options - Where to GO?
The Warm Water fishing on the Lower Sac is just getting started. The best part of the warm water fishing on the Sacramemto is the ability to fish for a multitude of species in a short period of time. Literally in 1 day a person can catch a shad, striper, bass, and carp. Now I will admit that all the stars will have to align to get the Sac slam but if you like lots of variety and some really cool situations then this is the fishing for you.
Shad: The Shad fishing is just getting started and within the next week things should really be going strong. There is nothing better than hanging out for a few hours and pulling on a bunch of fish. Shad are also known as the poor mans tarpon as they really pull hard. The beauty of shad fishing is the ability of getting into a good number of fish in the 2-5lb range during a short time period.
Stripers: The Striper fishing has also started but will get much better once the shad are gone. With lots of shad in the river there is so much food for the stripers that they fill themselves up on live bait. Once our shad friends leave the middle part of June then its time to get out the 9 weights and throw clousers for these big bruisers. When a striper eats your fly its like a train running into your line and the battle begins. Fish in the 3-8lb range are common with fish in the mid teens a true possibility. Every time striper fishing we have a real shot at trophy fish in the 20lb class.
Bass: The smallmouth fishing is going off right now. Just yesterday we had lots of grabs from smallies in the 1-2lb range. A great way to spend a couple hours sight fishing for our hard pulling warm water friends. This is a great option for a couple of hours to add to a shad trip. Yesterday the hot fly was a brown/yellow streamer. As soon as that thing hit the water those fish were all over it.
Carp: There are a good number of carp right now in the shallows. Now these are fishable as of right now but will get much more consistent once the weather turns warmer. If you like to sight fish to big picky fish then this is the next frontier. Carp are big mean fish and the Sac has plenty of them in the 10-20lb class.
Lower Sac Trout: The Sac continues to fish decent. Right now most days we are landing about 20ish rainbows in the 15-18" class. Right now with the flows around 10K we are spending most of our time between Bonnyview and Balls Ferry. Currently the morning time and early afternoon has been best. There is not much reason to be on the river past 4PM. The Sac will continue to fish well through June. Expect the PMDS and Caddis to continue to hatch strong throughout the summer. The hot flies have been pmds and baetis. It seems like the baetis is fishing best early in the morning and then the pmd starts happening during the middle parts of the day. This is a great time of year to get the kids out. Celebrate the end of another school year with a trip with your son or daughter.
Yuba Trout: The flows on the Yuba have stabilized the last 3-4 weeks and the fishing has remained consistent. Right now we are hooking about 20ish fish per day. This is the time of year when the caddis dry fly fishing is going to start picking up in the evening times. So if you are looking to hook some fish on dry flies then now is the time to get out there. The best dry fly window is going to be the last 2 hours of the day. Hot dries are going to be tan x-caddis and ec-caddis.
For anyone looking to do some fishing this week I am open on June 5, 7, 9-10. We can hit the Lower Sac or Yuba for some rainbows or we can go pull on a bunch of shad on the Sacramento River outside of Chico. Shad trips run a cool $225/evening.
Let me know if you got the itch and you want to get out.
Had a fun evening shad fishing last night with John and Linda from Lafayette. We had 25+ fish to hand and probably missed another dozen grabs. We started fishing around 5PM and got off the river right at dark. Most of the normal Chico River spots had plenty of fish in them. It was Lindas first time throwing a shooting head so it took some practice for her to get used to the line but she ended up doing great and landing about half of the fish.
Still have some openings this week if anyone is interested.
Hey guys. It has been a while since my last report. Things have definitely been different this summer with me staying in Chico for the fist time in 6 years. I have to admit that I am missing the cooler weather of Idaho and Wyoming. But needless to say the fishing remains really strong despite the hot weather. In this report you can find current reports on the Yuba and the Lower Sac plus save some money this summer with a discounted trip.
Yuba: The Yuba has had good dry fly fishing the last 3 weeks. The hopper fishing has been really consistent from 1-4PM. It definitely seems like the fishing before and after that time window is really hit and miss. The best hopper fishing has been on the lower parts of the river near hammond grove. Right now this is the perfect time to go do a pure half day dry fly trip.
The nymphing has been pretty average. On full day trips we have started fishing around 10AM and break for lunch around 1PM. In that time frame my clients have been hooking between 8-10 fish a morning. Then after lunch we go dry or die and stick with the hopper game for the rest of the afternoon. Most afternoons we have been getting about 15+ eats on the hopper. One thing to keep in mind is that it seems like the bigger fish are on the banks looking for hoppers as there aren't many bugs hatching right now. With the food source on the bank its natural for the larger fish to congegrate that way.
Lower Sac: The Lower Sac has been really good with the warm weather of late. I have been spending the majority of my time between Jellys Ferry and Bend. Most days we are hooking 40+ fish. What is really cool right now is the variety of the fishing opportunities. We are catching fish in the rocks, clay, and swirls. A couple of the swirls are fishing really good right now. It is so cool hooking a fish in a swirl and watching it swim straight to the bottom bending those 6 weights in half.
Openings: For those of you looking to get some fishing in my openings are below:
Discounted Trips: A full day trip for the half day cost of $295. This is a savings of $130.
Aug 2-3, 7-14
Regular Price Openings: Aug 19-29, 31 & Sept 1-5
I hope all of you are well and are getting some fishing in. Good luck out there and stay cool!
Tight Lines!

The summer fishing has been REALLY GOOD. The weather is cooling off and I have some prime openings for guys looking to fish the next couple weekends. Thats right you can come hang out in the boat in the next couple of weeks and save a few bucks! These will be the last discounted trips for a long time. So those of you looking to save a couple dollars here is your last chance. Check out the details below. Email ryan.johnston@hotmail.com to reserve your spot.
Lower Sac & Yuba
The Lower Sac has been really solid this summer. We have been having some great days with these higher flows. The lower drifts from Balls Ferry to Bend have been good to excellent with most days hooking close to 50 fish. While the upper drifts have been good fishing for those big fiesty rainbows. So if you want lots of action then now is the time to get out. Perfect time to bring out those family members that have never done it before.
The warm water fishing around Chico has been solid. There are still a handful of big stripers around if you are looking for a big fish. Last week I hooked 2 fish in the 15lb. class. Throw in a mix of smaller stripers, a handful of small mouth, and then finish the day throwing top water for largemouth and it can be a really fun day.
This is your last time to hit the Yuba Hopper Game before it is over! There are a couple more weeks left for you dry fly guys. Then come the end of the month the egg bite is going to start. So reserve your spot now if you want to hit the Yuba during the most ridiculous time of the year. From September 20th through October 15th the Yuba is amazing!
$100 OFF - Next 2 Weekends Aug. 24-25 (Fri. - Sat.) & Aug 31 (Fri.) Sept. 2-3 (Labor Day Weekend)
EGG BITE IS COMING! RESERVE YOUR SPOT NOW! PRIME OPENINGS BELOW.
Well it has been a while since I last made a report on the board. I hope everyone was able to get in some good high country fishing in this summer. It is about that time where the fishing in the valley is getting really good. Our salmon friends are making their way into the river systems and it wont be long before the famous egg bite is in full swing. Below is a first hand report of what I have seen on the river in the last week.
Yuba: The Yuba is just about to explode. I have had some really good days of nymphing with egg paterns, caddis, and small baetis patterns. The last couple of trips out there I have been hooking 25-30 rainbows per day. The fish are not really dialed into eggs yet but there are a handful starting to look for them. Not much salmon there yet but they are starting to make their way up. On saturday I only saw 5 salmon and Tuesday I saw 25ish. The only thing is that the majority of the salmon are still below Sycamore holding in the deep water. So those fish will be traveling over the next week. I would expect the egg bite to start in about 7-10 days on the Yuba.
Lower Sac: The Sac is fishing pretty average right now with most days resulting in 20-25 rainbows to the boat. If you are fishing the upper parts of the drift from Posse Grounds to Anderson there are a couple small windows when most of the fish are being caught. The grabby periods of the day have been from 11AM-1PM and 4PM-Dark. So if you are out there all day there are going to be some dry spells. Even with the lulls in the fishing you can still get a random strike per spot but its really hard to get more than that. The hot flies have been pupahs, small olive baetis, flashback pts, and birds nest. The salmon are starting to show up in strong numbers on the lower river. There are a handful on the upper drifts but the majority of the fish are down by Battle Creek. Expect the egg bite to be in full swing in a couple of weeks.
For those of you that are looking to do a trip this fall on the Lower Sac or Feather my openings are very limited at this point. Currently the only dates that I have open in the next 2 months are Nov. 19-20, 24-30. For those of you that are looking to get in some late season steelhead and trout fishing in then now is the email before those dates are gone. If you have family coming in for Thanksgiving then why not treat them to a guided fishing trip. Email me at ryan@rjsflytrips.com.
The last three weeks have been impressive. Lots of great days of steelhead fishing have been taking place in the valley. If you are itching to get on the water and feel the fight of these feisty fish then now is the time to get out there. Only a couple more weeks left for the valley steelhead game. I have a couple prime time openings still available to fish the Feather or Lower Sections of the Sac. Below is my current openings and full fishing report.
Current Openings: Nov. 19, 25-28, 30 and Dec. 3-8, 10-12, 14-18, 20-21, 23
Feather River Putting out year after year!
The fishing on the Feather has been awesome this fall. The great news is that our salmon population is holding on later than normal this year. We have small groups of salmon still making their way into the system and creating an egg bite that is lasting longer than normal. Expect the Feather to fish through Thanksgiving weekend this year. Right now we are hooking about 15 steelhead per day. Not to many places can boast of numbers like these. If you are into catching some pissed off fish then now is the time to give it a try. Fish in the 19-23" class are common and we are seeing a 25-26" about every 3 days. Call me ASAP for my only opening next week!
Lower Sacramento River Old Reliable!
The Sac has been solid the last couple of weeks. I have been putting all of my focus on the lower stretches of late. Fishing from Balls to Jellys Ferry and Red Bluff to Los Molinos has been good. For those of you looking to do some trout fishing and run into a couple of steelhead then the next two weeks is the time to do that. The Lower Drifts have been putting out about 20-25 trout per day and a couple shots at some big steelhead. Just this last Saturday a client hooked a fish that was probably 8 lbs. If you are into rolling the dice and looking for those monsters then Red Bluff is the drift for you. You throw in a bunch of trout to keep you interested then it turns into a really fun day. Call ASAP for my last openings this month.
Yuba River If you treat me nice I might give you some dry fly loving!
The Yuba like the Feather has had some decent late season fishing. There are still a few salmon in the river that are keeping a handful of fish eating eggs. I would call the fishing fairly average with most days resulting in 20ish hookups. The best part is there has been a blue wing olive hatch in the afternoons that has been getting the fish looking up. This last weekend we were able to throw dry flies for about 2 hours in the afternoon with fish rising to our flies consistently. So if you are looking for some good winter fishing then the Yuba can produce some decent nymphing with solid dry fly fishing thrown in the mix.
I had a good late season steelhead trip on the Feather today. This year the Feather is fishing much later than normal. Expect for there to be good numbers of fish in the system through the first week of December. The fishing today was really consistent. In total we hooked 15+ steelhead in the 18-24" range. The majority of the fish came on eggs. Today was a tad better than the rest of the week but most days we are hooking between 12-14 fish. Not bad for the weekend after Thanksgiving.
For anyone looking for a last minute egg bite trip then I have Nov. 27-28, 30 open. Anyone interested in these last minute trips then I will do them for the specail price of $295 for a full day. Email me ASAP at ryan@rjsflytrips.com if you are interested.
Hey guys. I had some cancellations for this week and wanted to see if anyone was interested in some last minute deals. Right now the only rivers that I guide that are fishable are the Yuba and Feather. Both are fishing well. If I had to choose one then I would opt for the Yuba as I think that gives us the best opportunity of having a great day.
Well here is the deal. You pay $295 and get a full day of guided fishing. Right now I have this Monday - Wednesday, Dec. 17-19 open at this rate. That is 30% off the normal rate of $425. Email me asap at ryan.johnston@hotmail.com if you want to get in on some good winter fishing.
That is a really great deal!! Plus Ryan is a great guide. I have fished both the Feather and the Yuba in the past few days and both are fishing well. You really need to know how to fish the winter flows though. Ryan is a great teacher and I wish I was in his boat yesterday. I hooked a monster Yuba steelie and at one point I could have pulled a Matt Heron tackle, but alas it ran into fast water...
I hope that all of you had a good holiday season. I can tell you one thing for sure is that I am glad that we are having some consistent dry weather after all of the rain we had in December. In December I was seriouslly thinking about going back to skiing and putting up my fly rods. Well the good news is that with all of this dry weather the rivers have dropped into shape and are currently in their good winter fishing patterns. This is a report of all of our local Northern California Valley Rivers that I guide. I hope that you find this report helpful.
Yuba: The Yuba has been fishing good with most days resutling in about 15-20 hookups. The key on the Yuba right now is to find the large groups of fish. If you can find a couple pods of fish then you will do really well. It seems to me that the river is fishing best below the big island. I have started to see some major changes over the last year where the lower river is getting better and bettter while there are times above the island when it is hard to catch fish. Maybe its a confidence thing but see if you notice any difference. Hot flies have been eggs and rubberlegs. Nothing wrong with throwing that. This is also the time of year that we see a decent number of steelhead in the system so dont be surprised to run into a 20-23" fish over there right now.
Lower Sac: The Sac is definitely in its winter trend. No need to get out there early as the fishing isnt really going till about 11AM. Time wise 11AM - 3PM is your window to really put the hammer to them. Before and after you can catch some fish but it is tough fishing for Sac standards. Most days on the river we have been landing about 20 rainbows. Currently the best drifts have been from Bonnyview down to Anderson and Anderson to Balls Ferry. There is better odds at biggger fish on the upper river and more numbers below Anderson. The hot flies have been eggs, rubberlegs, Hogans SM, and Hogans Red Headed Step Child. There has been a small baetis hatch in the early afternoon if the sun is out.
Feather: The Feather is fishing really well on the upper parts of the river near the hatchery. However with the flows being up the wading access is difficult. If you are a strong wader and are willing to get into some deeper areas then there is excellent nymphing to be had with egg patterns. This only has about one week to go as a lot of the fish are starting to get really dark. Last Friday it was a mix bag of half fresh fish and half downers. If you are in the need for an easy access steelhead itch then this is your last shot until spring time.
Well....that is all the information that I have. If you are looking to do some fishing in the next month then I have some limited openings. Email me at ryan@rjsflytrips.com for openings. Im currently running my winter special where if you book 1 trip then you get a second trip 50% off. The only catch is that all of the trips have to take place by March 7th.
Hey guys. I had a client cancel for Monday, March 25th. The weather is supposed to be great and the fishing is going to be awesome with that warm weather. I am offering a $100 discount off of a full day guided trip for anyone that wants to go on a short notice guide trip. Email me asap at ryan@rjsflytrips.com to book the trip.
I hope this note finds all of you well. One thing I know for sure that this March Madness has been insane on the court and on the river. Now on the river my clients and I are doing really well. The Lower Sac has been en fuego for a month! Now on the other side of things my bracket is a mess. I will admit that this year I only predicted one team right for the final four. But lets be honest who picked Wichita State to go this deep. Well enough about my ramblings onto the fishing.
The Lower Sac from Posse down to Balls Ferry has been really good. Most days right now we are hooking 50+ rainbows. The best fishing right now is in the afternoon so no need to get on the river early. You can get some love in the morning but it has really been an afternoon delight. From 1PM to 5PM the fishing have really been dialed into those mayfly hatches. Currently there are March Browns, PMDS, and baetis hatching in good numbers. It seems like the majority of the caddis hatch is over by this point. By far the March Browns are dominating the food source. Hot flies have been pheasant tails, eng things, dark lords, prince nymphs, yellow egg, etc. Good luck in finding the yellow egg as it seems that most shops have received an egg with a bad set of dye. So make sure the yellow egg you are buying is actually yellow and not whiteish with a touch of pink.
I havent been on the Feather or the Yuba for the last three weeks so I dont have any current information for you there. But there should be a decent number of steelhead on the Feather by this point and the March Browns/PMDs should be thick on the Yuba.
For those of you looking to do some fishing with me then my schedule is really booked up the next six weeks. my next openings are: May 17, 21-24, 28-31, June 2-5, 7, 9-12, 14, 16.
Now remember for those of you looking to do some shad fishing the best dates for shad around Chico is the first two weeks of June. June 2-16 are prime shad dates.
The fishing this last week has been good despite the frigid weather. The good news is the weather is going to warm up the rest of the week. Early next week the weather man is calling for temps in the high 60s. It is going to be a beautiful time to be on the river. Don't miss out on probably the last warm weather of the year.
Lower Sac: I have been spending the majority of my time on the Lower Sac the last couple of weeks. Fishing has been really solid on the upper drifts. We are hooking 30-40 rainbows a day on eggs and small may fly nymphs. Expect really good fishing on the Sac for the rest of December and January as we have the winter egg bite.
Yuba: I spent a couple of days on the Yuba this last week and had good fishing as well. Most days we were hooking 20ish fish on eggs. The great news is that the fish quality is finally back up and we are seeing lots of 16-17" rainbows again. Gone are those days where you catch a bunch of small trout. The best part of the day was that we had a great blue wing olive hatch come off that brought quite a few rainbows to the surface. We ended up throwing dries for over an hour to rising fish.
If you are looking to save a little cash then here is your chance. Book a trip during the select dates below and receive $100 off my normal rate. It is a great time to get that family member on the water for Christmas. My discounted openings are Dec. 16-18, 20-21 (Friday/Saturday), 28-29 (Saturday/Sunday).
For those of you looking more in advance on your calendars then I have Jan 1-11, 14-19, 21-31 still open as well.
Email or Call ASAP to get in the last spots of the year.
My post last week said good fishing was days away with the rain and we were right on. I got out one day last week during the dark rain conditions and we caught more big fish that day than I have in the last 2-3 weeks. We landed lots of nice 18-20" rainbows on eggs and small nymphs. The reality is the best winter fishing happens on overcast and rainy days. Looking at the 10 day forecast there is lots of good fishing coming all next week. Forecast for Redding - http://www.weather.com/weather/tenda...+USCA0922:1:US. I have lots of openings for next week. It is going to be wet. So bring your waders, put on a good rain jacket, and lets go catch some big rainbows on the Sac.
Below is a short fishing report of current conditions:
Lower Sac: I have been fishing the Sac the last couple of weeks and the river is fishing pretty normal with most days resulting in 20-25 rainbows to the boat. If you fish the lower sections of the river then there are still a handful of steelhead to be caught. Hot flies right now are beads, small pheasant tails, Hogan's S&M, small prince nymphs, and pmd nypmhs. The egg fishing should be awesome in the rainy weather.
Yuba: I fished the Yuba this last week and had decent fishing. We hooked 15+ rainbows on eggs and small mayflies. Plus had an hour of some technical blue wing olive fishing in the flats. We got a couple of fish on size 18 & 20 blue wing emergers. The Skwalas are starting to hatch on the Yuba but the rainy weather will slow that hatch down. Generally you want really warm conditions. So wait for some warm dry weather over the next couple of weeks and get out there if you are hunting Skwala fishing. Once the skwalas are done expect to start seeing some March Browns by the end of February. Hot flies on the Yuba were eggs, red copper johns, Hogans S&M, and an olive Fox Poopah.
Feather: The Feather is over by this time of the year. Expect the next big run of fish to show up in the spring time. Generally the springers show up in March and then stay around till the middle parts of May. Expect late March through April to be prime time. This has become a very popular destination for me in the spring time so make sure to reserve your spots ahead of time. These are the hottest fish that you will ever find in the valley.

This last week the fishing has been really good on the warm days. The warm weather has finally got all of the bugs going and the caddis are happy. I have seen more caddis this week than I have seen in a long time. Literally some of the biggest hatches of the year. The fish have responded to the bugs and things have started to light up. From now through April expect things to get really good. The best part of fishing now is getting the river mainly to yourself before the major crowds show up in the middle parts of March.
Lower Sac: I have been spending the majority of my time on the Lower Sac the last couple of weeks. Fishing has been really solid on the upper drifts. We are hooking 40ish rainbows a day on caddis and mayfly nymphs. The best fishing right now is from 10AM - 3PM. When that caddis hatch really gets going around lunch time the river is turning on fire. It is a great time to be on the river. Expect the fishing to keep building over the next 3-4 weeks. Don't miss out on some of the best fishing of the year in March. Also for you dry fly guys there is quite a bit of activity on the surface in the middle of the day during the thickest part of the hatch.
Feather: For those of you wanting to get in on the spring steelhead run then mid March to mid May is going to be the best time. My schedule is filling up in April and my dates are starting to fill up. This venue is getting more popular each year due to the massive steelhead runs that we have been having the last three years. These fish are literally the hottest fish in the valley. Come spend some time chasing these incredible fish of the valley.
If you are looking to save a little cash then here is your chance. Book a trip during the select dates below and receive $100 off my normal rate.
My discounted openings are Feb 21-22 (Fri/Sat), 26-27, March 2 (Sun), 3-7.
