I fished the lower Stanislaus last Friday and had a relatively good day. Seven fish to the net and a couple were fairly good sized--about 18 inches and husky. Great fighters, hard to get them out of the current. I used an orange San Juan worm, size 14 and tailed by a Zebra midge, size 18, about 18 inches below. Both were beadheads. Used a strike indicator about 6 feet above and two small split shot about 1 foot above the worm. I fished about half the day and really enjoyed it. It was my first time there. One of the big guys was an interesting-looking rainbow that was a little yellowish in color and had black spots everywhere, even going down to the ventral side. Definitely worth the trip....good luck1
For catching the most fish Froggy has it right indicators and some heavy weight. I have been talking to and watching some of the locals and they fish emergers. Last week I used a pinch on foam indicator (two foam dots with glue) about two feet above the fly. Tie on some of your favorite cdc flies and hold on tight. You can also add a little weight. I never land any fish, but it sure is fun trying!!
hit up the stan today and according to shaun, it wasnt as good as it was a few weeks ago. in total i had about 18 to hand and biggest was 14. nice to meet brian and see otter again. caught them on olive rs2s, hares ear, pheasant tail and if you can match the hatch, the bwo were going pretty good and alot of fish were coming up for them by the dam. i caught a few on a size 20 olive parachute adams. hope for more fishing adventure in the future with you cody!

Fishing isn't a matter of life and death....
It's much more important.
I spoke with a sheriff's deputy the other day after his SECOND time driving South Shore Tulloch Road. According to him, patrols have been stepped up because of a recent increase in car break-ins. I did notice some "fresh" broken glass by the restroom parking area...

Went friday because couldn't stop thinking about it. Two fellows were in the nest but the pool looked slow so settled in below the rock pile. How do you spell phenomenal day...
caught her on the second cast. perfect 20/20...
the water is very clear and cold go to the Stan... they love copper!

and everyone... my intention to share exciting fishing was for everyone here at the blog.
I received some interesting email threats through my profile asking not post anything about the stan, Ugly, because some people feel it's their own private water. Unfortunately I guess they don't read. Two months ago this "tail water" was featured by a northwest fly fishing, a mag nationally recognized. I don't think me catching fish there and sharing it with you all, to help everyone here catch fish, is going to destroy the river.
So anyway I caught the that bow on a size 20 brassie north side river, yes I crossed the river, below the rock piles below the dam pool in the riffle by the willows. I caught also a bright green-back Chromer in the 18 '' range that ripped my rig off as he headed down stream. Then caught many more all the way down to the cliffs. I was fishing by my self so that was the best pics I got.
I personally didn't asee anything wrong with your report Alpen Glow, Some guys on here are just like that. I fished it on sunday, Got quit a few fish nothing larger then about 15 inches, But I did get quit a few on dry's in the pool below the dam, With no water coming over the dam for the last 3 weeks or so I gotta wonder how long all those trout in there can last, It's turning into a warm stagnant, smelly pool. It was just great to be out fishing on a warm sunny day after all this rain we've had. Come on CodyM, give us a report, Everytime I looked over one of you guys was hooked up !
as a teacher and human being i feel that sharing knowledge is the best. I love meeting people on the river and sharing good spots to help generate responsibile fishing in "our" favorite places. Thats how they become protected, not by threatening other fly fishers to go away and shut up. How did we learn to fish? someone gave us good advice or shared a favorite fly?
i think we should all call the DFG and Caltrout and preasure them to relocate the trout in the nest, and release them into the river OR shift the flows back to that side of the dam. Maybe the water is too low to go over the top? Those fish will die by summer, with direct sun and 100 degree weather on it...
Alpen, theres nothing wrong with your report, its not like people dont know about the stani. As for the reort, I caught some fish in the run below the dam, and few in the sections of stream near the parking lot/outhouse. The other person I was with probably landed 25+ fish and the third landed a few also. Got most nymphing but one while swinging a softhackle. I would have fished the pool below the dam but there were a half dozen people swarming around it like a pack of hungry dogs. It was nice to see someone from the board.
I was one of the guys that sent alpen glow a pm. So im just curious why do you think there were have a dozen people chasing after those poor fish near the dam? Hmmmm I think the pictures of the "nest" or whatever you call might have brought a few more people. I fished it 3 times in early Feb and saw very few people fishing in that hole but now look and you really think it doesnt have anything to do with the posts you guys need to get a clue!!! Those fish in the hole are getting fuc---- pounded every day now!!! I was catching them and relocating them into the main river. Im sure I will get a bunch of people that dont agree but whatever. When will the bragging of numbers of fish caught stop? Does it make you feel better or what?
Alpen Glow, thanks for the report and glad to hear you had a good day. Edog is being hypocritical. He's posted the same things and there is nothing wrong with it. He's posted pictures of "Putah Hogs" and posted similar reports on the Stani. Heck, one of his past posts about the Stani was the reason I first ever gave it a shot.
Thanks for sharing your reports and keep them coming.
