Newbie...saying hi!

Hi...My name is Mike and I live near Santa Cruz. Everyone keeps asking me if I've fished Putah and I keep having to say no, because (a) it's a long drive (b) I'm old and lazy and (c) I'm a little intimidated by new and different waters.

Instead of lurking and reading all your posts I thought I should sign up and read alll your posts...at least you'll know who I am that way...and I don't appreciate lurkers on the other boards where I post...

I'm a tuber too and think maybe a tube can work in the lake portion, but that's a guess...I like to nymph, swing wets, strip streamers and would like to learn to fish dries....and I'm virtually 100% C&R

Can I start with a question?? With the current rains will the creek be unfishable? I'm thinking of coming up for a try maybe Tuesday and don't mind fishing in the rain....kinda like it as a matter of fact...but don't want to make the drive if the creek's going to be off....

Thanks...I look forward to learning about the creek...

-Mike

Welcome to the board,

I would guess that the recent rain has little to no effect on the water conditions.  Keep in mind that historically (based on my past experiences) the bite on Putah slows down quite a bit by mid February.  I don't fish it much any more as I have other endeavors to take up my time, but board posts should give you a good indication.  As is often said, "the worst day fishing is better than the best day working", so if you have the time and money to make the drive it won't hurt to look at some new water.

As for using a float tube, there are areas that work well.  Plenty of folks have used tubes in some of the flat water from above the upper bridge all the way down to Diversion.  Most of my time has been down in lake Solano durring the summer months fishing dries.  Spend some time on Google Earth to locate the slow stuff to save some scouting time in the area.  Don't forget that the water flows are down until the agriculture growing season kicks in.

Unless we get some very heavy rain (not expected) the creek will be fishable next week. Coming down from the bridge towards Winters you can pull out off the road and see the water in many spots or hear it at others. You'll see a number of slow areas all the way down to Access #5.Most fishers are wading this time of year due to low flows.
