aloha from sunny hawaii.  am returning to ca for a family vacation to truckee the 3rd week of march.  i know that the season hasn't officially started yet, but know that there are some year round streams and lakes.  what and where do you folks recommend in the area.  can't wait to throw a 5 wt again, 9 wt is sometimes getting too heavy.  much mahalo

Welcome to the board!

There are several places to fish in Truckee and the surrounding areas, depending on what type of angling you feel like doing...

Truckee River - Nymphing w/ stones and bwo nymphs, may get lucky and come accross a baetis hatch.

Little Truckee River - decent bwo hatches, so dry flies a good possibility.

East Carson River - check before going, cold weather may turn off the bite.

Pyramid Lake - standing on a 8 ft step ladder flingin' streamers on a 200/250 grn line or indicator fishing w/ snails and whatnot. Possibilty of sight fishing from shore if conditions are right.

With the relatively weak winter we have had, these may all be in good shape for March.

Be sure to call the shops for latests reports and any specific patterns they will use...

much mahalo dtp916.  it has been a really long time since i have been up there, moved back to hawaii in late 93, use to fish the area and putah a lot when i lived in the bay area.  really appreciate the drop back.  it will be nice to pull my stuff out of moth balls at my brother in laws place and throw a 5 wt again.  throwing a 9 wt can be a bit much, but you need it for the wind and sometimes that monster bone or jack.  hopefully i can get my line wet and tight on putah as well.

again, my mahalo my friend.  will be looking for more info as the date gets closer.smile
